I'm both happy they're talking about masking and mad that they made the last 3.5 years of my life worse by not doing it.
I'm probably being too hopeful, but I'm wishing that a Trump presidency makes libs start masking again.

Contrarianism towards Trump is my only hope for H5N1. But yeah, seems unrealistic given the current momentum.

Realizing I am just deeply suspicious of the libs all over the world now, after the last years of covid, after Palestine.
I know this is a bit doomer, but they are doing these rallying cries now and it feels so hollow. All the way here on the other side of the globe, just because they were forced to pause their unmasked brunch. And in my country at least where it all always has just been thinly veiled civility fascism, longcovid and covid are just 100% not a thing that exists. There are zero masks, this has been the case for years now. If these people now announce that they will mask again, I don't trust them any more than I did. The reasons they are doing it are optics, it's kind of getting me down.
I know I should be happy if even one person starts masking again, but I just feel deflated.
I'm with you here. It means nothing to me because I know they haven't actually changed. That's the definition of reactionary — it's all reaction. As soon as they feel like they "have permission" again they'll stop, because it's not actually about principles. The situation in California with the LA wildfires only reaffirmed this to me. Do you know who was most prepared? Mask blocs. And they provided, for everyone. The same people that have been discarded for the last 4 years by the state and populace at large came through, the actual city governance requesting aid from them, and I guarantee when this is all over they'll will be discarded again. I'm so tired of it.
Yup and as soon as nobody is watching, that mask will be worn on the chin or not worn at all.
The mindbending negotiotations I've seen these people do amongst themselves to get out of wearing a mask just makes this clearer. In my work there have been numerous occasions when I've been the only one who has masks and offers them to people. They sometimes take one, but they take it off as soon as they find even the weakest justification for doing so. They always look so incredibly anxious when it comes up.
And covid itself, I listen to marginalized people trying to voice issues that sound a lot like longcovid weekly, I get to witness doctors, experts ignore them. Especially if they use the word covid. Just last week in a situation like this, an expert streched so far as to openly considered the fatigue and brain fog the person had to be side effects from medication, medication the person in question had been on far longer than covid has been around, without the terrible fatigue.
Watching this "show" and trying to advocate for these folks to be heard and I just can't really even explain anymore what it is I feel when these sorts of optics happen.
Totally get it. But if there's ever a moment to radicalize people like this, it's while they're nodding along with you. Even if it's for optics.
