Hello admins. Iโm new to Lemmy and to Slrpnk and all that jazz, but Iโm already really happy of what Iโve found here - will share with friends in the same circles. Is there a donation link to help with server running costs? Best wishes from the UK
Meta (slrpnk.net)
Here we can discuss anything about this Lemmy instance/server itself.
Our XMPP support chat: Movim or XMPP client.
Right now we don't have a way to donate. It has been on our todo list for 6 months now, so soonish there will be finally some way to do that (through Liberapay most likely), but no clear timeline. Anyway, thanks for offering to donate ๐
Well you do have my heartfelt support.
Very late to the party but I'm still working through Anatham by Neal Stephenson. I think it's solarpunk adjacent enough, in that it's hopeful and has a lot of the sustainability ideas in practice - but also showcases a side where things have gone very wrong. I highly recommend it! ๐
I'm mostly a lurker but I just want to say I really appreciate you guys and the hard work you do keeping this instance going. I'm so glad to be able to use a server that shares my values.
Sorry for the intermittent down-time today. We experimented with some additional AI scraper blocks and also had to reboot the server and the firewall. There might be some further very short down-times in the coming days as we do some more experiments.
On the topic of fiction, I've been reading a book my partner recommended "A Psalm for the Wild Built". They described it as "happy nature sci-fi, something called solarpunk. I think you'd like it" lol. It's an easy read, a story set in the far future about a tea monk on an adventure with low stakes and pleasant wordbuilding. It's very welcome comfort right now. I'll check out !fiction!fiction@slrpnk.net, if anyone has suggestions for other relaxed-type solarpunk reads, I'm very eager to hear them!
I read that for a book club last year! I thought her take on robots was very interesting and different from most other scifi. I liked the idea of machines being able to evolve over time and have their own personalities. I also really enjoyed the hopeful vibes the book had & was a big fan of having an enby and an asexual as the main characters :)
Also there's a sequel to it called a prayer for the crown shy if you didn't already know. Her wayfairers series is also pretty good. I'm reading though it currently.
I look forward to these posts every month. Thank y'all for what y'all do!
Update to Lemmy 0.19.10 was completed. Looks like it went fine. This update will allow us to remove that "Nicole" DM spam a bit better.
In other news: looks like those AI scrapers found a way around out attempts to block them again and this this afternoon we are at near constant 100% CPU utilization again because of this ๐ข Lets see what we can do about this. Edit: got slightly better, only 60-80% now. Lets see in the coming days how it develops.
We also updated our Photon frontend to the latest 2.0-rc5 just now. Please test and report any issues.
Loving the instance! I just finished a book about fungi, Merlin Sheldrakeโs Entangled Life. Iโm continuing with William Gibsonโs Neuromancer.
Ah that's a classic! I haven't read it in years, but if you enjoy it it, Gibson has a collection of short stories that you may like: Burning Chrome
hhmm i enjoy shorts usually, especially Asimovโs I Robot and the Animatrix. thanks for the suggestion! I just bought โWe can remember it for you wholesaleโ though, i might read that first.
I haven't read any books lately let alone cool ones. Wait no, that's not true I read a book about fascism a month ago but that's not quite on topic.
Mostly I'm just here to appreciate everything you guys do for us!
Good to note that the game Half-Earth Socialism was developed as an extra to the book of the same title, by Troy Vettese and Drew Pendergrass, that also combines fiction chapters with non-fiction.
Lemmy has been really slow for me the last week or two. I pretty much exclusively use the connect app on my phone & when browsing will routinely have posts fail to load when clicked on. When they do load it takes between 10 and 30 seconds.
Has anyone else had this issue, or do I need to adjust my set up? Thanks for any ideas :)
UPDATE: it was indeed the app I'm using. Everything is very snappy on voyager or my webbrowser
Are you sure the Connect app works well with the latest lemmy release? A lot of these lesser known apps only test with Lemmy.world, which is on a much older release.
The mlem app dev just contacted me yesterday because some of their users had issues with slrpnk, but it turned out to be an problem in their app.
That said, yes the database maintenance mentioned in the OP should hopefully speed some things up again.
You were right it was the app :) thanks for immediatly diagnosing the problem lol
Ok, good to know. I hope the app developer will update it to be more compatible with the latest Lemmy version soon.
It might be the app, after work today I'll do some troubleshooting & report back what I find out
Povoq had to revert SLRPNK to an older, less powerful server due to instability on the new one,and the older server seems to have a bit of delay in some areas.
Even so, 10 and 30 seconds to load posts or comments is quite unusual. On my end, posts and comments load in about half a second, where as refreshing the All or Home views can take about 5 or 6 seconds, and my profile page can take about that long as well.
Does it take the same amount of time to load in a mobile web browser or on a laptop/desktop? (If you have access to one to test)
I thought it seemed excessive. Povoq mentioned that it might be the app I'm using, I'm going to try out some other apps and check if browser or desktop are faster after work today :)
Say is it possible to authenticate against your XMPP servers with 2FA enabled on lemmy? I haven't had any luck.
Hmm, it should do that as we connect the xmpp auth directly to the Lemmy database. Can you confirm that when you turn off 2FA it works?
Okay so I made the admittedly dumb mistake of assuming it was 2FA when i tried signing in. But yeah disabling 2FA didn't work. Interestingly what did work was changing the password. Maybe XMPP does not enjoy non-keyboard characters?
Hmm, possibly there are some limitations to the characters that can be used in passwords. We previously also had an issue with someone using a password longer than 60 characters.
Can you share the character that likely caused the issue? I might be able to report those issues upstream.
Same here... it does not work
I discussed this on the Lemmy issue tracker and the Lemmy devs are not willing to put some standartized restrictions on password composition to ease such interoperability. Thus the only advise I can give is to change your password to not use any obscure non-ascii characters and keep the length below 60 (30?) characters.
