My family has been using the Google Maps location sharing feature for a while. My partner is able to see if I'm running late, I can tell where my sister is when we travel together.

I would like to find a way to continue sharing my location with my family, without sharing it with Google. Are there any apps for this?

https://paralino.com/

A European alternative. I am super satisfied. Encrypted. Compliant with European data protection laws. From Europe (Germany or Austria). And there are plans to publish the app as open source in F-Droid.

If you're into self hosting, traccar is an option, which also has its own mobile app of course. Not the best thing ever but when it works, it's nice. Connects to home assistant nicely, too.

This should help:

(Not my site, I've not used these apps, YMMV...)

I think home assistant + the home assistant app will do this, although i have disabled map etc from HA so I dont have 1st hand experience. You need to self host HA and establish a connection either with nabu casa cloud or a vpn setup (it's quite easy to set up wireguard on HA)
