All about dogs - dog breeds, dog training and behavior, news affecting dog owners or handlers, puppy pics, etc.

Rules (Will be refined later on).

  1. Don't be a dick. This should cover most things, just keep in mind that everyone started somewhere and try to be helpful rather than rude or judgmental.

  2. No personal attacks based on training style or tools.
Discussion of balanced training including proper use of aversives is allowed here.

  3. All breeds and mixes are welcome. You can criticize backyard breeding practices but don't pile on people because they own a specific breed or prefer purebreds or mixed breeds.

  4. Do not support backyard breeders or puppy mills. Please do not link to or suggest buying from high volume breeders or those with an obvious lack of standards and testing.

  5. Do not help or support fake service animals. Please do not encourage people to buy fake service dog vest or ESA letters to get around rental or other restrictions & do not give advice on how to misrepresent a dog as a service or support animal.

Both my dogs love the human shield and will fight over who is under me. 🤣

That’s just adorable!

My dog really doesn't like thunderstorms, but the human shield is really the only thing that helps him from shaking uncontrollably.

So whenever there is a bad storm I end up laying on top of him on the couch watching whatever

That one's so known, it was on the first dog petting techniques.

snout smooch

That's funny. My dog didn't like it when I touched his nose even though he had no problem using it to jab me rather forcefully when he wanted something.

This isn't on the list, but he did like it when I carefully scratched the groove between his eyes.

My doggos like the in-between the eyes scratch too!

I figure it's like the wind in the face thing. Even I like sticking my head out the window, but if you blow into it? That's a frown.

"Rapid butt pat" is more properly known as "Butt bongos"

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 days ago

my cat loves butt bongos!

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Agreed, that’s what we call it in our house.

Make sure the dog isn't uncomfortable with any of this either. The Snout Smooch is practically asking to get nipped

Guilty on all counts.

Most of these work on my cats, too! No airplane ears, but the rest are kosher. Rapid pats are out of the norm—my last cats thought I was punching them when I did light pats, so I stopped right away. My current cats arch their backs and I play them like xylophone and they’re sad when I stop.
