The scary thing about this to me is the number of people I know who are deep down good people, but they cannot be trusted to not blurt out information and wreck rule number 3.

My mother and my ex are both like this. They may care deeply about protecting people, but because of their own lack of education and impressively bad communications skills, they will almost always inadvertently give up such information even if it's not their intent to do so. In a tense and stressful situation, this tendency becomes worse, fast.

It's maddening because they are otherwise trustworthy, but are so often too simple minded to understand what information is truly damaging.

If you see shit no you didn't.

If you're willing to do something no you aren't.

You are normal, you fear and respect the administration, and you obey all laws

In Dutch we have a saying 'horen, zien, zwijgen' which unpoetically translates to 'hearing, seeing, silence'. It is mainly used by people with bad intentions who do not want to be ratted out but I think this is a very wise strategy if you're in a situation where you and your fellow citizens are oppressed and you want to stay safe.
