Don't let maga find out or they will lose their shit. (They believe this doesn't happen to animals, and only humans that have mental disorders)

When I told my coworker about Islay, she got very excited to use that fact to help support her arguments with her right wing family or whoever she argues with about this sorta thing. Thankfully all my friends and family are left wing, most are far left, so I don’t ever have those sorts of arguments in my life, but I was more than happy to help her situation.

Yeah? I mean, most right wingers don't even seem to know that intersex people exist

They're gorgeous!! I'm curious, what do you mean by hermaphrodite?

[–] cod@lemmy.world 37 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Both parts. Islay has both testicles and a uterus. We call her a she (since our other cat is a boy so it’s just easier if one is he and one is she), but technically she’s a they. Unfortunately it’ll be very expensive to get her fixed because of it.

Spend the money unless you want to be responsible for Cat Jesus.

Immcatulate catception (I couldn't decide on just one)

[–] Liberteez@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

It's ok, cats are best in pairs

[–] cod@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Oh definitely, I will. She’s worth the much higher price.

I always assumed that sort of situation would render them sterile. It probably varies but the more you know!

Well, I suppose fixing has hormonal consequences too and not just reproductive, now that I think about it.

[–] cod@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

More often than not, cats with both parts tend to develop cancer as a result of it, apparently. That’s according to the vet anyway. But yeah I think they tend to be sterile in most cases.

[–] degen@midwest.social 10 points 1 month ago

Having another whole system to develop something cancerous probably doesn't help, but that's interesting. I'm guessing it could cause unusual stresses on the body throughout aging too. I hope fixing/spaying mitigates the risk! Such a pretty one, and extra enigmatic.

[–] Lycaon@lemm.ee 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ohh interesting! So would her chromosomes be XXY?

[–] cod@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I’m not too sure! That’s a good question though. I’m curious now, I’ll have to ask the vet the next time I see her.

[–] match@pawb.social 8 points 1 month ago

technically she’s a they

if you asked her pronouns she'd probably say "meow"

[–] LimpRimble@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

what do you mean by hermaphrodite?

Isn't that what Viktor Krum said when he was trying to pronounce Hermione?

[–] notsure@fedia.io 13 points 1 month ago

who would downvote such a handsome creature?......kissy kissy

What magnificent ears. I see that you're Canadian, so I assume that the name is after an Islay in Canada rather than the island in Scotland. What made you choose it?

Also, awfully brave for a cod to own cats

[–] cod@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I love her large ears. Reminds me of a fox.

Islay was named after the scotch, so you were right about the island in Scotland! When she was a little younger, the grey in her coat was far lighter in colour and looked like a smoky colour, so I figured since Islay is usually a smoky scotch (and my personal preference for any hard liquor outside of Canada), the name seemed fitting. We would’ve called her Peaty if she went by he instead, for the same reason.

I hadn’t put two and two together with my username here, that’s hilarious.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 1 month ago

Well that's an excellent reason!

Agreed. I love her coat, she’s such a model.

What a great little loaf!

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Damn, that's a lovely face. The way she's laying there makes her seem like she has much wisdom to share!
