That's not for the court to do. That he was charged and convicted of terrorism is. The fact that he's a fascist and did this to forward those politics was surely the basis of the terroism charge and conviction.

This story, though, won't see wide publication. Hell, I wasn't even aware of it until just now, in the wake of his conviction - not when it happened. And there's absolutely a lot of people who will just wave it off as "Oh he was a crazy loner." (Yeah, that's the fucking point, of course; the fascists are crazy.)

“Notably, he continued to provide significant emotional and financial support to … Justin, even into his 30s, as Justin struggled with unemployment and finding his path,” Schorn’s office said of Michael.

Oh, he found his path. It was just a really shitty path.

Justin Mohn, 33, was sentenced on Friday after a five-day trial by a judge that found him guilty of murder and terrorism charges, Pennsylvania state prosecutors said.

Plague is a bacterial infection known as "The Black Death" ...

This may not be true. Bubonic plague was certainly the cause of later epidemics, but the Black Death was very possibly something else that we don't have other examples of. We don't really know with certainty what it was.

Edit: Well, I'm wrong!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death#DNA_evidence

Definitive confirmation of the role of Y. pestis arrived in 2010 with a publication in PLOS Pathogens by Haensch et al.[4][c] They assessed the presence of DNA/RNA with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for Y. pestis from the tooth sockets in human skeletons from mass graves in northern, central and southern Europe that were associated archaeologically with the Black Death and subsequent resurgences. The authors concluded that this new research, together with prior analyses from the south of France and Germany, "ends the debate about the cause of the Black Death, and unambiguously demonstrates that Y. pestis was the causative agent of the epidemic plague that devastated Europe during the Middle Ages".[4] In 2011 these results were further confirmed with genetic evidence derived from Black Death victims in the East Smithfield burial site in England. Schuenemann et al. concluded in 2011 "that the Black Death in medieval Europe was caused by a variant of Y. pestis that may no longer exist".[59]

While there remains some suggestion that the Black Death was airborne transmission, and not only by fleas, that DNA research stands pretty strongly.

They'll also tow it to their impound lot, and you will have to pay the towing and storage fees to get it back.

Clearly, he didn't recognize that they weren't giving him the awards.

Edit: Oh, wait. FIFA did give him the trophy.

Not being rude, just honest, but fine.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 5 points 2 hours ago

Fine. Since I'm apparently "rude," I'll elaborate.

Your wife goes missing. As the spouse, you are the prime suspect. The police are far less interested in finding your wife than they are in arresting the person they think is responsible for your wife's being missing. They are going to interrogate you, in one of those tiny rooms with no windows where they put themselves between you and the door, and get more and more inside your personal space. For hours, and they're going to treat you as though you are guilty, because they want you to confess to a crime. They want you to incriminate yourself.

You're already super stressed about your wife being missing, maybe you're wondering where your kids are and the stress they're under. Do you have a dead solid alibi? Are you sure? The police are allowed to lie to you; you are not allowed to lie to them. Are you certain you won't even misspeak? Because what you consider a mistake, they will consider a lie, and that makes you even more a suspect. Are there any other uncomfortable facts in your life? Affairs, money trouble, arguments, drugs? Is anyone undocumented? All that shit is about to come out, all that shit will be used against you.

Are you mentally capable of navigating this situation, where there's a real chance of your being imprisoned for who knows how long? No, you are not.

Unless you want to load more trouble on top of the trouble that's already there, you will not speak to the police without your lawyer present.

You asked. I answered. Sorry if you didn't like the answer. If you already knew what you wanted the answer to be, why did you ask?

Call from a burner phone and give an anonymous report. Even then, if you have the slightest connection with the victim, you will be questioned, and you should shut the fuck up.

Investigators are looking for someone to arrest, prosecutors are looking for someone to charge, and courts are looking for someone to convict. Whether that person is actually culpable is irrelevant.

Search over 9,000 LAPD headshots. Processing happens on your device. No photos or data are transmitted or saved. Blurry, low-resolution photos will not match.

Site is slow right now, but you can run your own if you like.

Could just be me, but I am only seeing votes on my comments from other fedia.io users. Feels like there might be an outbound federation issue going on. Inbound to fedia.io seems okay, I'm seeing new posts and comments from other instances.

Lots of protests scheduled for tomorrow, all across the country, in cities and towns of all sizes. Odds are that it's going to get stupid somewhere. I figured it would be a good idea to throw out some quick reminders.

Don't talk to police. Shut the fuck up.

With some exceptions:

  • Always first: "Am I being detained or am I free to go?" This isn't some sovcit bullshit, this one is for real. Free to go? Ignore them and go about your business. Detained? Do the next ones.
  • You must clearly and explicitly express your right to remain silent. "I am exercising my right to remain silent. I want to speak with a lawyer."
  • "I do not consent to any search." If they are allowed to search you or your vehicle/bag/property, they don't need your permission. The only reason they would ask is if they don't have grounds to search you.
  • Identify yourself if asked to. Full name and birthdate, that's it. Failing to do that will only make it harder on you.

Come prepared

This has a few different meanings.

  • Bring water, first aid, and a trash bag. Large groups of people get thirsty, hurt, and can make a mess.
  • Depending on your state, it may be illegal to bring weapons to a protest. Find out for yourself. I'm not saying you should bring weapons; that's for you to decide.
  • It might be a good idea to be familiar with the area you're going to protest in, and bring a paper map, so you can have an exit (or other) plan. Don't get funnelled into a dead end, for example. If that means reconnoitering that area today, go do that.
  • Be electronically safe. Make sure your phone/watch/whatever only unlocks with a password, not biometrics. Use airplane mode.

Avoid violence

  • Come prepared for violence, but don't start it. As my dad always said, don't start fights, finish them.
  • "Being peaceful" is not mutually exclusive with "being really fucking angry and loud". Be scary; they only understand fear.
  • Shit is probably going to pop off somewhere. You will need to make a decision in the moment whether to get in the shit or make your escape. Neither choice is shameful. If it's your time to "live to fight another day," run.

There's certainly a whole lot more that could be said, but this is long enough. Good luck.

US servicemembers: You have the right and duty to disobey illegal orders. But what exactly does that mean? How does that work?

ICE, alongside the U.S. Secret Service, conducted a large-scale operation in an upscale Irvine, California neighborhood Wednesday to apprehend an individual accused of distributing fliers containing the personal information of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents, authorities confirmed.
