An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

The current community here on world will stay open. I have no plans of shutting it down unless the community decides it should.

Thank you all again for creating such a wondetful place,I look forward to seeing the community continue to grow.

I've created a new Lemmy instance at dullsters.net

When I created this community several months ago I had no aspirations of it becoming much of anything. In a short amount of time it has grown to over 1500 subscribers and is one of the top recommended non-political communities. I am always looking forward to the posts that are shared here, and the unique culture being developed.

I see the importance of the decentralized aspect of the Fediverse. We frequently see drama surrounding moderation and federation policies. None of that applies to the content in this community.

I have no qualms with admins running their site the way they want to and they are often placed in difficult positions. However, this is one of the true places of neutrality on the Fediverse and it should remain that way.

In the few months this community has existed there have been maybe a half dozen moderation actions taken. You have remained, for the most part, very dull, and I thank you for that.

The name of the community should be changed, I hadn't realized that dull men's club was the result of someone else's ideas and work. The new name should represent this community that you all have created and the place it exists, The Fediverse.

The new instance won't have any users except for the purpose of moderation, you will still use your account from a federated instance. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the site, it should be done whenever I get around to it.

In the meantime suggestions for the new name should be made in a top level comment so that they can be voted on.

Thank you all once again for making this community what it is.

This is a tad embarrassing. You see, I thought that I was merely copying a popular Facebook group. I was unaware that Dull Men's Club was an official club. Please give the site a peruse as it is quite a delight!

M6 x 1.0 stainless steel cap nuts aka acorn nuts were $2.39 each at Ace and I need 14. They had 3 in stock. Would have been about $36.00 with tax.

Went to Amazon and got a 50 pack for $5.39 with 4.7 out of 5 star reviews and free shipping.

It’s worth about thirty six real dollars so I bought a couple pizzas with it.

Replaced a ceiling mounted one that made the plasterboard vibrate with an inline fan. The inline fan is up in the attic and ducts through the roof. The new fan extracts 3x as much air and is much quieter.

Still need to make good the ceiling, but that's tomorrow*'s job.

*Tomorrow in this case may not actually be tomorrow.

A few weeks ago my friends dog ripped up the screen on my storm door.

Today I got replacement screen and installed it into the existing frame.

I just finished setting up my own Jellyfin server. Lately I've been getting into using open source software and this weekend I thought it would be nice to self host on an old thinkpad I had from my college days. There were a few roadblocks I encountered, but ultimately I got it working. Now with the Finamp/Jellyfin app I can have a Spotify/Netflix-like experience completely free (well minus the domain name cost). I highly recommend it if you have been thinking about doing it for a while like I was. I'm so glad we have open source software like Lemmy and Jellyfin available to us.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who suggested not using Cloudflare tunnels. I'm sure they would have got me eventually. I am now successfully running Jellyfin with Pangolin and couldn't be happier.

We have an old Prius we rarely used that has needed a new battery for...I'm too embarrassed to say. It's more of a project than it sounds like for several reasons.

First, without a working battery, the rear hatch does not open normally. The only way to open it is to crawl through the interior into the back, then find a small opening with a manual release, then figure out how to get it to actually release. And if you don't apply upward force on the door while you do that, it will immediately latch itself closed again. Adding to the fun, the release is below the rear deck, so you have to lift it out of the way, when you would prefer to be sitting on it. It is awkward.

Second, getting to the battery requires you to remove a lot more than anyone would reasonably expect. To take out the small section of floor above it, you first half to remove the main floor and the storage tray underneath it. Then you finally have access to the battery. You have to unscrew the contacts and the bracket the holds it in place down inside a narrow well that's just big enough or the battery. It does not easily fit ratchets or even screwdrivers at the angles where you need them. It is also awkward.

Third, it's a simple thing, but lifting a car battery out of a narrow hole when you have nothing to hold onto is surprisingly difficult. The battery that was in there no longer had any kind of a lifting strap, so I had to lift it out by pressing my fingertips around the sides of it. It was awkward and also somewhat painful.

Fourth, lifting in the new battery was easy, but putting everything back together was every bit as much fun as it was t take it apart. See "Second" above.

It would have all been a lot easier if I weren't 65 and seriously overweight. I'm still fairly strong, but I am not nearly as flexible as I used to be and I don't fit into small spaces well.

I wasn't at all sure the car would start, even with a new battery, but it did start right up. Now I just have to do some basic cleaning and I can take it to CarMax to see what they'll give me for it.

I'm claiming victory, if only a small one.

The plant was in her brother's apartment after he died in 1989 and she's kept it as a memory of him since.

Full disclosure my daughter did most of the watering and spraying. So proud of her.

i re-hemmed my shirt today (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

i should have ironed it first so it laid flat, but it would have been troublesome regardless because it was rolling up so much. i think they cut the cloth really unevenly, and that may be why the hem stitches came out originally. i also may do a second pass on it later depending on my motivation

thought i'd share because i thought this scored pretty high on the boring/10 scale. my work isn't great, but it's punk so it's fine

for those curious, here is the shirt in question. yeah, i'm a tanktop guy. i subject everyone to my hairy ass arms

A stylized dragon with the words TRANS RIGHTS. The dragon is made of the trans flag colors, with the text TRANS above it. It is breathing fire, and gaps in the fire (negative space) form the word RIGHTS.

in my ongoing quest to figure out how to add garlic to every meal

my garlic bagel has figured out how to properly complement my coffee (yes on its own). they are both bitter. they both are delicious. they both go well with hatred.

i knew breakfast was going to be my largest hurdle before dessert (no a tub of toum does not count as dessert we are civilized. we need two tubs).
