A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Maybe some of them just hit the same holes.

Funny enough, a physician of the time, who examined Caesar's body after he died, was of the opinion that only one of the stab wounds would have been fatal had Caesar received prompt treatment.

Bonus Points: In the confusion, some of the assassinating Senators stabbed each other by accident.

It was no accident, they really, really hated each other's guts.

Can hardly blame them, tbh, what better time to settle some scores?

Lucky they didn't hate each others penises.

Fun fact....

There's this block in Rome just called "Sacred Area" south-east of Piazza Ravenna. It's an excavated area with three or four temples in it. There a plaque that says that the ancient Roman Senate chambers were just west of this area, and that's where Caesar was going/coming when he was killed.

Anyways, there's a hotel right on that spot. I've stayed there a couple of times without knowing that I was sleeping right on top of where Julius Caesar was killed.

Now, how cool is that???

There's also a cat shelter in the excavated area: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largo_di_Torre_Argentina

I'm not sure if it is a shelter or just a feral cat colony. But there sure are a lot of cats there.

It's in the southern end of the square, there should be a sign and some steps down, looks like it's open noon-4:30. When I was there in 2019 there were a couple of rooms full of cats being sheltered for various reasons and you could go hang out with them, dunno about now.

There's also a cat shelter in the Non-catholic Cemetery (where Keats, Shelley, and Gramsci are buried) by the Pyramid of Cestius but that one wasn't open to the public last I saw. Usually cats wandering in the cemetery tho.

I read this meme then went back to sleep, and had a dream that I was freeloading at Cicero's swimming pool while he wasn't around and I woke up when I heard his wife Terentia coming home.

(yeah I know Cicero wasn't involved in the assassination and I dunno if he had a swimming pool but I just had to tell someone.)
