They're also suggesting cotton production (as the 'dirtiest crop') is to blame. Unfortunately washing hygiene products like tampons before use isn't feasible for the end user.
Since they didn't mention in the article, now might be a good time to mention silicone menstrual cups as an option for those that haven't tried them.

I'm not a fan of AI or automation in general (at least not without human oversight) but I hope someday autonomous drones can patrol crops and eliminate weeds and harmful insects so we can reduce our dependence on chemicals
