Hi! I'm Emily. I'm a transfem lesbian programmer leftist (I'm the whole ass stereotype TwT) and I also come from reddit. :D

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Welcome Emily!

Hello! Like most, I'm fleeing Reddit following the API changes and finding that I actually like this place a lot more. It brings to mind early 00s Internet where it was a much tighter community and your voice was actually heard (prior to shouting into the void xD)

Anyway, I'm Sebastian - Seb is fine. Homoromantic ace medical student from England, UK. Looking forward to (hopefully) making friends here!

Thank you! And thanks for accepting my application in the first place. I'm used to being a lurker on reddit but hope I can help contribute to making this place be better :)

Hi, the discomfort by the current state of web2.0 things have been making me flee into decentralized platforms during this last year. In particular the Reddit changes are the ones that made me leave Reddit, though I was sporadically active there -though long time user- and, tbh, the only actual subreddit I really enjoyed (and I usually joke about it being the Only Good Subreddit) is r/askhistorians. So far I am enjoying the threadiverse despite how rough around the edges it still is and I have been more active in this last few days than probably been on reddit for a year. Every now and then I search for instances and communities around the lemmyverse explorer to find interesting communities and I believe that's how I got here.

About who I am, My name is Bruno, I am a 38 yo cisgender gay leftist based in Uruguay. I do research in mathematics for a living and I enjoy playing Nintendo games. I am very bad at writing introductions so I guess I'll finish here but maybe add things later as they come into mind.

ty, it's nice to be around

[–] influx@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hey all, I'm @Influx, friend of @Veraticus from various tech/gaming circles. Like everyone, a reddit refugee, and thinking hard about how I want to engage in social media from here on. Interested in music (mostly electronic), games, AI, and the intersections thereof.

Like @xeger, I'm not totally convinced that Lemmy will get enough content to really bootstrap healthy communities, but also open to creative thoughts about how to generate that content.

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah it's way slower here than, say, reddit.

[–] alex@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Hi! I'm alex (they/he), I like small instances and am trans so I figured this would be a nice place to check out :)

Hi, I made this account because I'm still figuring out where in the fediverse I belong. I migrated away from Reddit for the same reasons as everyone else. So far this instance seems nice and chill.

I'm the InkWeaver (VVoVV <- Spider on the ceiling)

... I'm also Frank at Crossnokaye, colleague of Veraticus and a refugee from Reddit.

[–] heartnotglands@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hi everyone! I'm heartnotglands, I met Veraticus via some discord stuff. I'm a trans woman in the greater DMV area :) I'm pretty into tech and interested in learning more about stuff like this!

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Welcome! 😍

[–] nac@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago

Hello! I'd rather not share my name but I am happy to say we share values.

Like everyone I'm looking for places after reddit. And I like redundancy. This isn't my first instance I registered at but I thought it'd be good to have one that I know won't attract certain types of negative people.

[–] norcalgeek@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hi! I'm Charlotte. I'm a trans woman in Northern California (think rural farms, not San Francisco or redwoods). I am an advocate for data privacy, free and open source software, and decentralization on the web. To that end I am active on Mastodon, i self-host as much as I can, and I am a member of the Nextcloud community. I am here to learn and to connect with like-minded, queer folx.

Hello, I'm from the beehaw server and just happened to see your messages. I'm just interested in learning more about this whole federated thing and exploring all these interesting little communities. ❤️

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Welcome, we love our Beehaw brethren!

[–] HeapOfDogs@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thanks! These little instances kind of remind me of the old 90s Internet. Tiny communities doing their thing but still public. I love that I'm on beehaw and here at the same time and others from other places can also chime in.

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago

Yeah it is cool; they remind me a bit of old-school message boards too, but, like, with a joined backend so you don't have to participate in just one.

Reddit did wind up crushing all of those... but I think the Fediverse has some advantages relatively. Except in Google search results, where all the good things are still, well, reddit.

Hopefully some lessons have been learned about where to put good content in the future.

[–] Fantasmita@lib.lgbt 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

H1ª I'm Fantasmita. I’m a non-binary, asexual and aromantic person from Spain. I work as programmer, and I have interests on computers, retro computers, astronomy, role playing games (specially on D&D), science, science fiction and fantasy. I'm pro open source software, and leftist. Also, I'm another Reddit refuge.

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Welcome, we’re glad to have you!

[–] Veraticus@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Hello darlings!

I'm @Veraticus, sometimes known as Josh. I set this instance up partly to join my friends together, partly to have a space that 100% aligns with my own politics and interest, and partly because setting up new servers is fun.

Looking forward to chatting with people here.

Who am I? Here is an introduction and an argument haha

Why? Autism, patriarchy and high T levels from drinking kefir and eating clean :D

[–] TheGIGAcapitalist@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

Thank you for making such a great community and being so welcoming! 💙

[–] TheGIGAcapitalist@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago

I think I misunderstood the "why" part but I'm keeping it lol

[–] xeger@lib.lgbt 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hi all! I'm Tony, IRL friend to @Veraticus and tech omniheurist.

I'm here because I disapprove strongly of Reddit's money grab, and -- as we've seen with so many other products where the community adds value -- we can't rely on corporatations to fulfill their half of the bargain that we make for these "free" services. The Fediverse offers a fragmented, content-sparse alternative, but if enough people are willing to make the leap, it will be more beneficial to us users in the long run than any walled garden of content.

One challenge is that I'm used to lurking, not posting. Obviously that's going to have to change!

[–] anem0ne@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Welcome!

Totally understand the lurking v. posting hurdle; it always takes a bit of time to feel comfortable in a place before really wanting to contribute. What would help make that easier?

[–] xeger@lib.lgbt 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I'm not sure it's a matter of comfort so much as willingness to put forth effort / supply of interesting life experiences.

What drew me to Reddit in the midst of the pandemic was the sheer number of posts by people who had something salient to say -- a question, a point of view, a piece of creative output. With so much content, of such an intellectual bent compared to Facebook or Twitter, it was easy to scroll and be entertained: just subscribe to a dozen subs, absorb, and discover new subs as people crosspost and link to subs you haven't heard of.

Commenting is its own art form and that's typically how I contribute to Reddit. I'd say I spend more time reading the comments than posts, and I've written orders of magnitude more comments than posts.

The crux of the issue is critical mass. How will Lemmy achieve it? I've spent a few minutes searching for communities so far and the search interface is frustrating. As a neophyte to this whole Fediverse initiative, my first impression is that distributed search will be the cornerstone of its success.

[–] HeapOfDogs@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

Great comment. To me success comes one comment at a time. It's taken me days to get a feel for all this new stuff and I have lots to learn still. This thread is the first time I have engaged.

I totally agree with the UI being a challenge. I remember when I joined reddit years ago I was all wtf is this hot mess. Now it's second nature. I figure the same will happen here. ❤️
