The argument that these guys always make is that "its hard on small businesses", and they're not exactly wrong there. If I have to be able to pay two weeks wages to each employee with no productivity in return, that's a gamble which requires me to inflate my pricing enough to cover the worst odds, or risk running out of operating cash if everyone comes down sick in the same window.

What they seem to overlook every time though, is that rather than cutting entitlements which are in the bigger picture beneficial to both parties, a much simpler solution would be to roll up sick leave into ACC and increase that levy proportionately.

Everyone employer pays the same known rate, and can be more confident in their cashflow, while every employee is guaranteed the leave they need to recover, regardless of how long they have been employed.

I remember many years ago reading a contract I was signing, that was written by a union. I remember reading the section on leave entitlements, that spelt out in full detail what was only the minimum legal requirements at the time. I remember thinking how weird it was to have it in the contract when it was already the law.

Since then, National removed the requirement for employers to provide and specific amount of breaks (I think Labour brought this back) and now they are rolling back progress in the number of days of leave you're entitled to. I understand very well now that the union wasn't dumb they were experienced.

It's disappointing to see this kind of thinking. Apart from being inhuman this would probably tank productivity because of presenteeism.

Now Brooke van Velden has poured cold water on the idea.

It really shows how screwed up Luxon's political instincts are when it took an ACT minister to say "hang on, this attack on workers' rights is going too far."

If this government doesn't kick the population in the butt enough to join unions this country is fucked.

I remember years ago hearing about MAGA rallies in NZ and being genuinely baffled. I guess making you guys more like us with our pitiful workers rights situation was the goal of that.

I'm glad to be employed by a company that has the living wage as a minimum, went to 10 days sick leave a year before Labour increased it to 10 and has comprehensive coverage for long term / terminal illness (this has included bringing a workmates family to NZ when he got cancer)
