I think it’s just because Lemmy (and the fediverse) doesn’t yet have a critical mass.
Before creating !scifi@ttrpg.network I was thinking about creating a community for Traveller alone. But I decided to poll several other places beforehand. Not a lot of people showed interest. That’s why I decided to create a more general community.
I share your need for activity. I really do. I just don’t have much to offer. At least at the moment. I’ve been dabbling with mapmaking lately, but I’m not prolific enough. I have plans, oh yes, quite a few ideas brewing and bubbling, but nothing to show. Yet.
It’s very common, expected really, to have many more consumers than producers in any social network. But I’m still here. And I’d bet a few more are also around. Lurking? (I love that word when used so casually)

I appreciate your map posts and for taking the time to ask for input before making sci-fi. I feel like splitting Traveller off was unnecessary given the amount of traffic but I suppose to each their own.
I understand it's a niche hobby on a niche platform (Lemmy in general) so it's not a huge surprise there aren't a lot of people posting. But I am surprised by the comparative volume of meme posts on TTRPG.network. It's almost all meme posts and comments. Clearly people are happy to engage in that way, but not elsewhere. I don't get it.
I've never played traveler, but it sounds fun! What do you like about it? Any favorite moments you'd like to share?
Well, to start out with, Traveler was the second game I ever played in 1977, just a few weeks after I started playing Dungeons & Dragons. I think the pulpy goodness and the references to the Age of Sail give a really great roleplaying environment. Traveller really created the concept of the big story arc within the game, and the lifepath system. Both really give you a lot of information that you can use to create a fun character. Combat is pretty deadly and I think that helps encourage role-playing. There are some anachronisms and things that don't really make sense in a modern context. However, I think you can really leave those if the rest of this setting makes sense to you.
I have only played a very limited amount of Traveller but have done a lot of reading and really like the setting and system. I'm not sure exactly why though. It's much crunchier than what I would normally like, but in a good way. I definitely like the math of rolling 2d6, as a change from all the d20 based games I've played. I suppose I just like the old school 80's sci-fi vibe in general. I wish I had given this game more attention when I was a kid.
