Almost all of them are crying about consequences for US businesses. Im here wondering why tf Ireland should give a fuck about that?

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's an economic answer to this (of course there is) that you're not gonna like because I didn't:

Ireland is full of American multinationals who have their European headquarters here. If any of them were to trade with illegally occupied territories under the proposed and broadly supported "occupied territories bill" the fines would be huge and in some cases it would be difficult for those companies to avoid.

Yeah i know that ireland is a tax haven, but why should ireland itself care about those foreign leeches? Its not like they would lose any tax income if the tech companies were to move away lol

Our tax haven status is gone. We signed up to the 15% minimum OECD corporate tax rate along with a bunch of others. There are other European countries with a lower tax rate now (Hungary for example).

Those massive companies account for a very high percentage of our employment and tax take unfortunately.

We'd lose a whole lot of income tax/prsi, which is the government's largest funding source.

https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2023/0824/1401458-35-of-corporation-tax-collected-comes-from-ict-sector/

Its Annual Taxation Report, published this afternoon, says the ICT sector now accounts for 35% of the corporation tax collected and around 10% of income tax revenues.

Damn its actually more than i thought

PRSI is about another 2%.

The way how the West is completely abusing and therefore in hyper speed destroying the term antisemtic is insane 🤯

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

This honestly really grinds my fucking gears. Antisemitism is a real problem and the bandying about of the word for every minor disagreement with Israeli policy does a real disservice to those who might actually be suffering it now or in the future.

The right wing Zionism is breaking, and is being replaced with old OG anti-Semitism.

and all Jews in the west will suffer, including those jews who turned their whole lives into being zionists. except those will just flee to Israel.

but paradoxically there are fucked too, as without western support, Israel will either become a North Korea pariah state, or finally collapse and become a democratic state where everyone will have equal rights, and those zionists will hate it, even though they'll face absolutely no consequences for their genocide.

so the result will likely be disapora jews will be seriously fucked, and zionists jews will face no consequences for their actions.

For those not familiar with what all the Hullabaloo is about here, it's referencing the Occupied Territories Bill which criminalises:

trade with and economic support for illegal settlements in territories deemed occupied under international law

There is very broad support for it here because why wouldn't there be? It's targeting all illegally occupied territory, so not Israel specific.

Wikipedia link.

AIPAC really has US politics by the balls. I wonder what a really thorough corruption investigation into IAPAC would bring to the light...

Is this a big deal as I think it is?

due to favourable taxes a lot of corporations are officially in Ireland.
