It's good, but, have you noticed the enterprise has a crew of about 10 people? It's the main cast, and a few recurring characters here and there, and that's it. Sure, there's tons of extras in the bar and other shots, but none of them have names or lines. I happened to re-watch some TOS and there's new extras everywhere, on every away mission, on the bridge and they're... there. Once I realized this it broke my immersion a bit. Otherwise it's pretty good.

I am checking out the first season and I love a lot of it. The visuals are amazing, tough I do think the ship has way too much empty interior space. The aesthetics, costumes, props etc all looks incredible though.
The cast is spectacular. Ethan Peck is perfect as Spock. Given who is Grandfather is I am not surprised. Jess Bush is also great as Chapel. I struggle with Anson Mount though.
The problem is everything moves a little too fast. All the character became close friends way too fast and I wish te show had been more patient with some of the characters back stories
Some of the episodes are really dumb, The Serene Squall and The Elysian Kingdom were just WTF moronic.
I do admit that it is best Trek I have seen since STNG.
Love this series.

I mean.... Alternate opinions don't bug me. I'm not an admin of Startrek.website. I'm not gonna have a screaming meltdown because you don't like a show I like. The people who bug me are the people who speak unilaterally as if they're the be-all and end-all. Like the "Discovery isn't real Star Trek" shit gets an instant block from me. Otherwise I don't really care. Might block people who are extremely irritating about their opinion but that requires like... constant bitchiness and being rude to people who do like the show over the course of multiple threads.

I'd agree. Just because I like Discovery, and that it means a lot to me with the queer representation, doesn't mean that I think it's the best thing ever made. I think it gets a lot of unfair shit, much like TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT did back when they were released, but there are also legitimate complaints. Discovery has its problems. I mean the final season was so bad I almost changed my username on Lemmy...

Disco might have worked if it had been set after Voyager.
It wasn't about the time setting. I mean they jumped around in time. It had two main issues, one was the strong focus on Michael Burnham as the main character. It had to be Michael coming up with all the important solutions or helping others to find their solutions. It got a bit better over the seasons, but then the second issue was the same as also the Picard series was suffering under. A grand start into a season, big issues, weird things happening but by episode 3 or 4 the writers fail to bring it all together in a manner that makes sense.
Somehow not happening in SNW. Although watching the first episode of this new season made me wonder why we needed a cliffhanger for that at the end of the last season.
I have no problem with Michael being the focus of Disco, but yeah, there wasn't any cohesion in much of the overall storyline. (With all of its problems, I still enjoyed Disco until just after they returned from the "other place". [Trying not to spoil])
For the life of me, I still don't know what they were trying to prove with massive pivot on the Klingons. They should have made those characters a separate race and used them as a first step in positive Klingon/Human unification, in stereotypical Start Trek fashion. (I mean, the timelines and lore was so broken by Disco, anything goes at that point.)
The thing with the Klingons was likely trying to explain why the TOS Klingons were just guys with curly hair.
I like the DS9 time travel episode where Worf says, yes those are Klingons, and no we're not going to talk about it.
If it went too much past 10 years we start running into Pike's end days.

Though a musical episode would be more… difficult.
Each season can take a year to make but represent time differently in the show. They could have 3 episodes in a row that take place in a month, another that’s a week later and another 2 months later.
They could go for 20 years and have it only be 8 years in their timeline. Look at shows like 24, and the Pitt, which occur in real time.
Turns out that was an alternate reality and in this one Pike avoids his fate and remains in command of the Enterprise.
Except that would cheapen a bunch of character moments, violate established cannon, and would just be lazy writing.
Stories are at their best when they are dynamic. If nothing ever changes, you have a trashy sitcom or soap opera.
Sure, follow a prequel timeline long enough, and you star hitting cannon events. But it's simple to move forward. You tell new stories set in-between the established cannon. But still constrain yourself to not violating that cannon.
I watched a couple episodes on a plane recently and I want to start watching in earnest. It was so surprisingly good and fun.

To seek out new jokes and new storylines;
To boldly go where no writer has gone before!
