The video makes good points but the reason why Uber is such a runaway success and able to take the liberties it does is because the user experience is better than everyone else. Whether it's the app based approach, which I remember Mini Cabs and Taxi drivers banding against, or the sheer amount of cars available. What the UK needed was its own nation-wide Uber and it never happened. The closest we got was a handful of black taxi apps.

Maybe in Britain, but in the Netherlands it's because somehow the regular taxi companies have to adhere to a different set of rules than Uber.
That's part of it in the US too, Uber could undercut the taxis.
But... Uber actually showed up if you called, the cars were clean and didn't stink.
I can't help but notice your last sentence is in the past tense. I guess the same happened as with all "distruptive" companies like Uber?
