In a blog post, F-Droid staff say that Google's plan to force devs outside Google Play to register with the company threatens to kill alternative app stores like F-Droid.

I mean, it kind of sounds like it's time to start looking for alternatives to Android. Linux phones work well enough, but there isn't a good reason to migrate right now, and the app library for Android is more mature. If the app library is cut off at the knees, then there's a reason to migrate.

As far as the app library thing is concerned, I think that depends on the distro and if there are special requirements for the apps it runs. However, if it can just simply run Linux packages with a touchscreen interface, then I already mostly migrated to multiplatform foss apps that I can export my settings to.

However I really don't want to buy a new phone anytime soon. I was planning for this one to last me atleast 5 years.

Ahhh sooo now Android is turning into Apple. I guess this should have been seen as coming since google killed the open development of Android. I'm out of the loop but aren't there versions of Android that aren't google based?

Yeah there's versions based on AOSP such as Lineage and Graphene. If nothing else I hope F-Droid remains operational for them.

real. fdroid is going to be necessary as shit in the US gets more dystopian. i didn't realize graphene is a fork but people are turning to it.
