But but but that's not Unix! https://fqa.9front.org/fqa0.html#0.1.1

(Seeing plan9 running on real hardware always makes me unreasonably happy, so thank you!)

Thanks 💖 The X200 was a gift from a colleague back in the late 2010s, when it was already very old. But it runs Plan 9 beautifully :) I've been tinkering with it with the vague idea of switching to it from FreeBSD as a daily driver. I think maybe I could do without Emacs but I just need a "real" Web browser too much to make the switch.

@duncan_bayne does it run fast with the distro you use or is it slow?

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Super fast, in fact it's as responsive as my Framework 13 running either Linux or FreeBSD. But it's running 9front, a fork of the Plan 9 operating system - so it's much lighter-weight than either of those OSs.

And modern browsers like Firefox are so slow as to barely usable on that hardware; I was running Haiku on it prior.

@duncan_bayne i kinda had that problem on my thinkpad where its so slow and it cant handle brave so i had to use firefox

Did you get the audio working on it in Haiku? Thats the only thing keeping me from running it on one of my 130s.

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah. It just ... worked out of the box on the 200, IIRC.

A fine use for a laptop, I think we can all agree. 10/10, no notes.

Are you from Queensland or do you just have bad taste?

[–] catrass@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago

What's the difference?

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Born in London, grew up in New Zealand, living in Melbourne. The socks were a gift :)

Love to see plan 9. Is it just on the laptop or do you have a grid?

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Just on the laptop.
