It’s interesting how there’s so much 3-dimensionality in the buildings and then everything past the doorways feels so flat.
Over here, I'm wondering what the deal is with someone only painting the lower portions of the bricks white. Granted, it was no doubt much harder those days to get to the upper areas, but I'm also wondering if it was an 'owner thing,' a local thing, city thing, Dutch thing, etc.'
I don’t know, but I suspect it’s both easier and protective against things that are unlikely to affect higher bricks, like water damage
Hmm, interesting. Maybe semi-corrosive materials on the streets? Coal dust? Horse manure? Even just someone sauntering over and relieving their bladders?
Oh, those are all better options than water damage, lol. Teamwork!
I saw the image and thought "damn, is that Delft?" And then I saw it's Vermeer, so it probably is. Still pretty much looks like this.
