Guidelines:

Things that are well-made and durable (even if they won't last a lifetime) are A-Okay!

Unlike that other BIFL place, Home-made and DIY items are encouraged here, as long as some form of instruction is included in the body of the post.

Videos links are not allowed as post titles, but you may use them in a text post.

A limited amount of self-promotion is accepted, IF the item you are selling aligns with this criteria:

  1. The item must be made with sustainable or recycled materials.
  2. If electronic in some way, the item must be open-source.
  3. The item must be user-serviceable (if applicable).
  4. You cannot be a large corporation.
  5. The post must be clearly marked with a [Self Promotion] tag in your title.

i got two from shokz, but both degraded after a few years - first they offered recycling them, but they stopped doing that even. it would be nice to have one that could be used for longer

I've tried to find some but most bone conduction headsets are made for the athletic market - swimmers and runners - so being waterproof is paramount. Repairability and being waterproof don't usually play nice together. There are only a few manufacturers so there's not much incentive to compete. None were up to my standards. As it stands today bone conducting headsets are just ewaste. The only company I could see doing them well is Fairphone but that's an entirely new product category, and a relatively unpopular one at that. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I have Open Move and do not like the vibration and I will send you a pair NC if you DM me.

Huh, how do they degrade? Looking forward to that with mine...

My first pair the pads over the “speaker” bit fell off after time.

Granted I had thoroughly drenched them in sweat and other random outdoor gunk for nearly 2 years before they did.

My second pair doesn’t have the pads and have been holding up well. No issues on my end but I would wager the battery will fail in time.

Perhaps the battery capacity fades.

Mine got a rattle in one side where the speaker broke free inside the housing. Still works but is annoying.

I was interested in getting some, so checked out the website of Shokz. On the positive side they are very dedicated to openness—their slogan is "be open" —, but on the negative side they define openness narrowly as "not covering your ears".

I was hoping to find information about sustainability and repairability, and for a second I got my hopes up. Oh well.

Hopefully we'll see some less crap products in the future. I feel like the technology is promising. Will be watching this thread—I don't have suggestions, I just found their dedication to openness to be amusing.

fwiw I’ve owned a pair of Shokz running headphones for like 5 years now and they still work great. No noticeable issues with battery degradation. Maybe only issue is the rubber cover for th USB socket got stretched and I recently cut it off.

I had a pair of Shocks and some static electricity killed the proprietary charge port.

I bought a cheap pair off aliexpress that I'm happy with.

They were 8% of the Shokz price and have held up fine for 12 months, and are usb-c charging.

Shokz wouldn't hear me out for their device breaking and offered me a 20% off non-combinable voucher for another pair.

Same experience with shokz
