So currently, you signed up to an instance (lemmy.world). That's the name of the site you're currently using. Each instance has their own name, rules, communities and users.
When you see something that ends with @instance.com, that means that whatever's behind the @ belongs to that instance (ex: my username is binette@lemmy.ml, so I'm on the instance lemmy.ml). If you don't see an @ after a user or community, that means that they are on the same instance as you, so are local.
What allows a user from lemmy.world and lemmy.ml to connect with eachother is federation. To put it shortly, if lemmy.world was not federated with lemmy.ml, I wouldn't have been able to answer your question, let alone see it.
To scroll on your feed, you have options that are similar to reddit (new, top, active) that determine post order, and then you can choose content that you subscribed to, that's on your instance (local) or that's on all federated instances including yours.

A little cheatsheet for lemmy specific features:
To refer to a user, use @username@instance.com
To refer to a community, use !community@instance.com
you can check which instances yours is federated with/is blocking by scrolling down and going to Instances
when you post, refer to not only the community rules, but also the rules of the instance that community belongs to
you can block an instance if you don't want its content or users to appear on your feed
if your comment/post got removed, or you have any mod action done to you, you can scroll down to the modlog (sometimes it's only available on the webpage of your instance) and look up your username.
