Low-Spec Gaming

323 readers

Welcome to the community for those of us gaming on "humble" hardware. Whether you’re rocking a 10-year-old ThinkPad, a budget laptop with integrated graphics, or you’re just a fan of modern games that can run on a toaster, you’re home.

We’re all about finding those hidden gems that run on anything, sharing optimization tweaks to squeeze out an extra 5 FPS, and proving that you don't need a $3,000 rig to have a good time. If it runs at 720p/30fps, it’s a win in our book.

Community Rules

Don’t be a hardware snob. We’re here because we aren't chasing the "Ultra" settings. Mocking someone for their specs or telling them to "just buy a new PC" is the easiest way to get banned. Be cool.

Post your specs when asking for help. If you’re asking "Can I run this?", please include your CPU, RAM, and GPU (or integrated chip). We’re nerds, but we aren't psychics.

No Piracy. Don't post links to ROM sites, "cracked" games, or repacks. We want to keep this community safe and visible on the Fediverse without getting the admins in trouble.

Keep it relevant to low-spec life. General gaming news is fine, but we prioritize posts about optimization mods, low-spec benchmarks, and "Potato-friendly" game recommendations.

No low-effort self-promo. Don’t just drop a link to your Twitch or YouTube channel. If you made a video specifically about how to run a certain game on old hardware, that's fine—just engage with the comments and be part of the conversation.

I created this community because I couldn't find anything like it on lemmy and i was bored, most of the systems i have are also low end. I felt making this space would be helpful for those with worse machines than me.

Also, you're welcome to say hi or ask a question here, or even make your own post.

Good idea for a community, especially since prices of hardware have gone crazy, and a lot of us are going to be making do with what we have for a while.

I don't know how low is "low", but I'm gaming on a 1070, which is still going strong with some relatively new games at 1080p.

I'm using a Raspberry Pi. I bet those specs are worse than yours! Kuddos for the community.

May i ask which model of pi and how much RAM it has?

[–] aword@feddit.online 3 points 4 days ago

Pi5 8Gb. If you're going to use it as a daily driver I'd recommend this one. You may also compress ram with rpi-swap/zram, which will help you fit more things into that 8Gb at the expense of some CPU cycles.

Raspberry Pi 400 runs DOOM 3 better than an Xbox, stop flexing

[–] aword@feddit.online 1 points 4 days ago

That's interesting; I didn't know it could do that. Looking around the Pi forums, it looks like it's reasonably playable at lower resolutions unless there's a lot happening on the screen. Though with an eGPU it appears it can be played well at 4K. For those who come after me, here's a link to building dhewm3 (doom) on the Pi: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=351364

As a patient gamer, I'm here for it!

Yes, patient gamers unite!

Played several boomer shooters on my (older, non-gaming) laptop, all ran great. Blood, Ion Fury, Dusk, even Nightmare Reaper through Bottles was fast.

The need for this community is only going to increase in the foreseeable future

I'm all about this community. Been gaming on a 2017 laptop with integrated Intel graphics.

Hi! I have a Ryzen 7 7700X with integrated Radeon graphics. Amy ideas for what I could do with it? No GPU of course!

[–] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 3 points 5 days ago

I guess factorio? As long as you don't plan on building something gigantic, it should run ok.

My system is not really low spec…. But most of my favorite games fall into that category, so I hope y’all will take me in!

Such a cool comm idea!

Hi! My low-spec gaming rig is primarily a product of: 1) ~~cheapness~~ frugality where I want most of the same PC to last 6-10 years, 2) not upgrading my GPU because the whole situation with 3070 GPUs, and 3) not being too much into gaming, except for Cities Skylines, American Truck Simulator, and MSFS2020.

Cities Skylines is more CPU intensive, so my few-years old Ryzen can handle that. I'm sure ATS and MSFS2020 could look better, but ultimately I get more value out of the feel of the gaming wheel and joystick than what I can see on-screen. To each their own.

I always like to suggest retro games because most systems can run upto atleast playstaion 1 and before. Im sure there's a way to play something you like via emulation.
