I can't say that I've tried the emulator you're talking about and don't know how well it performs, but SMW did get an official GBA port as Super Mario Advance 2.
As for flash carts, an EZ Flash Omega or EverDrive GBA are what you're looking for. Both carts have two options with a more expensive model that has more features. I have an Omega Definitive Edition and I'm very happy with it.
Aw hell yeh, much easier to just buy a regular cart. Still useful to know though if I want to try jank like putting tv shows onto cartridges.
Edit: For the EZ flash or EverDrive do I need to get a seperate flashing device? in which case what would you reccomend?
They just use a regular micro SD card.
I have a number of EverDrives and they all work great, the support is excellent as well. When the 64x7 didn't work with the analogue 3d earlier this year, the fix came out in like 3 days. Krikizz does great work. I will say, they are a little picky about which sd card you use but I will look to see which I have installed currently.

So, going by that, SD cards should be fine.

These flash cards are the GBA cartridges that you're talking about.
