Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

I built a new PC for my kids for Christmas, and it's been getting a lot of use. I got a great big screen and we've been playing 4 player SuperTukCart and Overcooked and having a blast. Any suggestions for split screen games for 2-4 players welcome!

But the crazy thing is that the DDR5 RAM I bought in November 2025, now, in December 2025, less than 2 months later, is selling for easily more than twice what I paid! As far as I can see, you can't get 2x32GB DDR5 RAM for less than about $1300NZD 😮

Yeah it's basically a FOSS Mario Kart clone. Graphics aren't amazing but the game is fun to play split screen. We also did the soccer mode which is sort of Rocket League I guess.

Sounds great!

(Glad I got that super wide monitor!)

I got a 34" ultrawide monitor and it is working great for 4 player split screen! The monitor is almost as big as our TV 😅

Sounds very similar. Will be interesting to try it with the teenagers

The cause of the price increase is one of the industries main suppliers (Micron) gutting their consumer side (Crucial) to supply more chips to AI companies.

Yeah, I was only checking prices because of the posts about RAM prices skyrocketing.

I haven't done an upgrade on my PC for years now and it seems unlikely that I will anytime soon with how prices are skyrocketing. I'm considering just getting a steam machine once it releases so we can play games on the TV.

I have my server plugged into the TV which we have used for games up to now (normally Stardew Valley or Lego City Undercover), plus for streaming games my laptop couldn't handle. With xbox one controllers. It works well.

Good idea. My server is way too old sadly to play games and has only onboard video of a decade old xeon cpu. With the prices of everything now, I'm not keen on putting any more money into it!

I just outgrew my Raspberry Pi server and needed the power so I turned the PC into a server. It was already connected to the TV and used for games, at the time I used it for VR which is how it ended up in the lounge connected to the TV.

I sold my Index a while back but I'm keen for a Steam Frame if it ever actually gets released and is able to be got. Steam don't sell hardware to NZ which can make it a bit tricky, but I managed with the Index and earlier with the Steam Controller, so hopefully I can work this one out.

Yeah we might get the usual high prices from importers like the Steam Deck if it's not officially sold here. But honestly if the trajectory of PC part prices continues, it might still be value for money.

Yeah perhaps, as long as we don't have to mortgage the house to get one 😅
