I see we overlapped a lot this year. What's your opinion on The Ruins?

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Meh. I didnt hate it but it kinda felt like this was just a bunch of rich kids trying to buy their way out and I couldn't root for any of them, there was no connection for me. It had some fun bits but it read like the author was writing a really descriptive summery of a movie he saw.

Actually, the next book on my list is The Relic. I read that a million years ago and it left the same impression. If you dug Ruins, you might like that. It'll help if you're into the X Files.

I tried going into "The Ruins" blind, alas a bit like the protagonists, and what I was expecting was a very different book.

::: It felt like it was relishing in the suffering and seldom more. There was some good character creation but, as you said with seldom redemptive qualities. But my key problem is the omnipotent omniscient and omnipresent antagonist. And at an opposite junction, everyone is so daft. :::

Did you enjoy more "Weird Sisters" or "Guards Guards!"? (I know those are very different).

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 2 points 16 hours ago

That's a tough call but probably Wierd Sisters slightly more. I do like the Watch books a lot, especially the later ones, but the Witches are something special. The three of them together just work on another level.

What are the entries specified as "podcast"?

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I do a crappy little podcast with a cousin and some friends. Its like a book club really, but its fun. We take turns picking books. I mark them down on my list so I can keep track of them better and its easier to go back to find authors.

The Sparrow is bad. Substitute The Book of Strange New Things.

I was convinced into reading The Sparrow this year. I agree, I did not particularly enjoy it.

What didn't you like about it? I read it like 20years ago and remember basically liking it. This go around it didn't go as well. I wouldn't say I didnt like but, but I won't reread it again in 20 more years.

Interesting recommendation. We did Under the Skin a few years ago and we all really enjoyed that.
