The British could ignore the wall because at the time they were at peace with the Dutch, who let them sail into the harbour.

The Dutch city of Nijmegen also tore down its walls in 1874 because cannons had made them useless, creating Eerste Walstraat (first wall street) and Tweede Walstraat (second wall street)
