Edge is a necessary tool to download Firefox if you don't want to use winget.

Invoke-WebRequest has entered the chat

🫠

In Powershell 6 it actually is cURL for what it's worth

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Isn't that still just an alias for Invoke-WebRequest though?

At least, I heard again of that being the case not too long ago. Might have also been outdated information, though...

[–] The_Decryptor@aussie.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, MS has been "shipping" curl with Windows for ages, it's just that legacy powershell has an alias for curl to their internal download module that predates the bundling. And they won't change that because it has backwards compatibility risks.

Upside is, it's a literal alias. "curl" uses the internal module while "curl.exe" uses the normal app.

Further upside, if you use the up to date version of powershell, that alias is gone as they removed it during the transition.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

Edge really isn't a bad browser like IE was. It's just chromium.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just yesterday I was required to use a Windows 11 PC for a university thing. I double-clicked a PDF and it opened in Edge by default... Which then REFUSED to close until I go through the whole onboarding process. Accept the privacy policy (literally no way to refuse). Log in to MS account (skip). Import data (skip). Import data from another browser (skip). Pretty sure there was another step or two. Then, and only then, I was able to see my PDF or close the window.

Each step took more time than it should because the option to skip is always hidden with some dark pattern. This whole thing cost me valuable time, and guess what, Edge wasn't the only MS bullshit I had to waste time on in that time-limited lab class.

Edge is a FUCKING TERRIBLE browser, and if you don't think so you haven't used it, or you have Stockholm syndrome. Chrome/ium sucks too but it's nothing compared to Edge. (And Firefox sucks as well, there are no good browsers, but Firefox appears to be the lesser evil IMHO. I'm also partial to Vivaldi, but I haven't used it in some years)

That's on the university admins for poor setup. SOURCE: I've setup such machines.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is it really though? That is not acceptable behavior on personal machines either.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

in this specific situation, the impact on their limited time to do work is on the university

and completely separate to that, that behaviour of the program is unacceptable

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Thankfully I'd have to install Edge first for this to happen.

... You don't have that choice? Oh, oh, you said uninstall??

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Sometimes, life really IS good.
