I can't really picture her as Lara, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Feels a bit like casting Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.

She's a good actress tbf. I'd watch the movie if it got good reviews though.

When are they going to hire someone with the muscles Lara should have?

I'm fine with unrealistic body standards for unnaturally talented characters, but at least make it the right unrealistic body standard for what the character does!

I don’t remember Lara Croft having muscles, just big tits.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

Not big tits. Triangle tits.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yea, the unrealistic standards have been around a long time.

Even most art of Red Sonja (1973) is drawn far more "sexily" than realistic, and she's far older of a character than Lara (1996).

Of course both were created to leverage sex appeal, but my point is Lara Croft has still always been exaggeratedly skinny.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago

the polygon tits of history.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What were your thoughts on Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft?

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

Same. She was and still is crazy skinny for most any action role.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why should she have muscles?

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Play the games. She's acrobatic as hell.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I've played the games. You should try having a look at a female acrobat.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

You're right, I saw many acrobats. They have muscles but still appear very skinny.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yea, they're all shorter than and more muscled than Lara, at least floor gymnasts. Any gymnast is more muscled than Lara has ever been canonically represented. (at least ones pulling off anything close to similar)

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

They're not "muscled". Lara can't do anything about her height anymore than you can. She's not a gymnast.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

If you don't think gymnasts are muscled, then you're simply too braindead to understand my critique in the first place...

Notice how my original comment was about how she's too skinny. I mention height because it has a huge impact on how the gymnasts look: Being short requires proportionally less muscle to pull off the same stuff. That's why floor gymnasts are usually short as hell, so they're flinging around even less mass. It's important to understand real life if you're going to compare.

I'm not saying she has to be some muscly shortstack. I'm saying it'd be nice if an athletic female character was represented as having an athletic build. They do it all the time for guys. Why does every female character have to be the most cliche variety of 'pretty'?!

She should at least look like she could do one pullup for how often she's, you know, pulling herself up in the games...

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The male characters are often way too mucular though. It's also not realistic, they look like body builders.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yea, it's usually over the top for them, too, but at least they're allowed to frigging have muscles when they need them.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The actors don't need them though, and I don't need actors to undergo extreme physical changes for me.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Nowhere did I say they should force actors to do anything. Why are you hellbent on failing to understand this most simple of ideas that women should be allowed to look muscular, too?

[–] snailboy@leminal.space 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Idunno man, Sophie's looking pretty ripped in this photo.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Not having fat is not the same as having muscles.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 8 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I'm honestly surprised, she looks the part. The question is, can she act well enough to carry the role past the visual?

[–] murvel@feddit.nu 2 points 1 month ago

can she act well

No

[–] Kraven_the_Hunter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I watched every season of GOT and never saw her act once. She's so.... wooden is the only way I can describe it.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Most if not all of that was from the character. She was the stuck up big sister always trying to act proper, especially after her mom uh.. died.

Her acting hasn't been much different in the other things I've seen her in. It just worked out for the GOT character.

[–] Alchalide@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You probably need glasses.

[–] TempermentalAnomaly@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Agreed. Anything more than 350 polygons is a betrayal of the original.

[–] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

That promo photo of her is promising. I'll definitely give it try, hopefully its good!

Dear Sophie,
If you really want people to forget how they butchered your debut show, now is your only chance.
Wear the real Lara Croft costume.

God speed to you!
