Did they conspire to kill public transit ? Did big tobacco conspire to falsify health studies ? Did the agro industry conspire to make fat the big bad ? Does the bear shit in the woods ?
They could have become leaders in renewable technology and cornered the markets with their trillions, remaining rich beyond belief without destroying the world.

Why would they not? There is no honour in capitalism. Everything is about the money and nothing counts unless it sells, regardless of any societal or ecological impact.
