Ie similar to how Lemmy allows users to create instances that are federated with each other, only this Discord alternative's instances wouldn't federate with each other.

Instead, each instance would be a complete silo, although instance owners would be given the option to potentially federate their instance outwards (ie to other federated platforms), if they wish.

Perhaps it could potentially be forked from the already existing Lemmy?

That's matrix

I like how everyone in here is like, "that's (insert one of twelve completely different things)."

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 6 points 4 days ago

I think that means people use Discord for twelve completely different things

I can't understand what you're asking. If you want server to server relays, that's IRC that has been around since the previous millenium. Matrix also has something like that. If you want single independent servers, that's regular chat rooms.

Matrix is better than IRC for most uses because it can save chat history but IRC can’t

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

You mean something like on Matrix.org?

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There's Shoot as a fediverse alternative to Discord.

Otherwise, as others have said, IRC, Matrix, or Teamspeak are worth looking into. Especially the latter got a major refresh at one point, so it's not the dinosaur you might expect from its age.

Perhaps it could potentially be forked from the already existing Lemmy?

I really don't see the point of turning a discussion forum into an instant messaging platform. Like, the requirements are completely different. You might as well start from square one than trying to transform one into the other.

Yeah, ultimately in the end if it's a good project and somehow it all gets federated together one day who knows.

XMPP and Deltachat are federated (though not with each other). A person can self-host a server that can communicate with any other XMPP or Deltachat instance.

No irc is not discord like. It lacks the most basic features.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Yes, such as spyware

[–] Forester@pawb.social 4 points 5 days ago

That would be TeamSpeak

[–] Zen_Shinobi@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Irc?

Teamspeak or Mumble are another good alternitive

There's Sup being developed by dansup (the lead dev of Pixelfed). Did he stop the development?

I mean, it's not exactly a Discord alternative, but rather an attempt at instant messaging.

People should also stop trying to make Lemmy something else than just forums.
