Me to my mom: Mom you can't just download .exe files from websites nobody's ever heard of before, that's how you get viruses.

Me right now: OH FUCK YEAH GIMME THAT .EXE FILE WHOEVER YOU PEOPLE ARE.

You can always play computer nurse later, if need be!

[–] rogsson@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You could always run it on Linux through Proton/Wine

[–] winety@lemmy.zip 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That doesn't make it (much) safer.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You could always run another virtual linux in your linux to make it safer.

At that point, just use QubesOS. I'm pretty sure you can pass through your GPU to VMs on there, although I don't use it myself.

I use an air gapped system for stuff like that. I read about it here, and I imagine what I think it may be like and I gotta say I like what theyve done with it

Your username reminds me of something. I don't know what though ...

UT2k4 was the least UT to have a native Linux build.

it is that much that it was impossible for me to check every package but everything has been scanned for viruses

Seems legit

Best FPS ever, and still holds up.

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

ONS maps could strike another spark in MOBA crowd if they released that today.

[–] KiwiTB@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Agreed. Onslaught is so good, but damn so many good game modes. Double Domination, Bombing Run, Assault, etc. It's all good and so much content. Inject, cube to think of it wasn't there a free expansion which added more vehicles and maps.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yep, the Cicada was a fucking beast.

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

This is awesome, still one of my favorite games, and IMO the GOAT LAN-party game.

I'm still self-hosting a dedicated server. Anyone know if I'll need to upgrade that, or are the "optimizations" all client-side?

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It looks like the patch has improvements for the server, so you might look into upgrading!

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Ah, thanks for finding that!

They even have upgrading instructions, sweet.

I have a server admin question that always bugged me (in fun ways)

some Admins had ability to summon OG unreal characters into the running ctf or death match etc maps.

is there some sort of "cool" server admin commands that exist anywhere ?

Online play on Dreamcast is up too ;)

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Oh man, that takes me back. I was once in the top 50 of Dreamcast players globally. Must have been mid 2001.

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks to Epic Games too, for not being assholes about suing them.

[–] Hazzard@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

It may be a low bar, but dang if most companies aren't ready to limbo.

[–] rothaine@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

People made some cool AF maps for this game.

Never really played this other than a few times at a friends place back in the day. I was a Halo fan but always thought the vehicles in UT 2004 looked like cooler versions of the Halo vehicles (the UNSC oness mainly but some are similar to covenant vehicles too). Especially the Scorpion, it's like a sleeker warthog with fucking mantis blades, that's just objectively super cool.

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I played for the sexy voice 'HOLY SHIT!". I was also a big fan of "PANCAKE!" The manta was a lot of fun that way.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

Did it need anything to run on modern PCs? I fire up UT2k4 at LANs once every couple of years generally and have never had problems.

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I know everyone loves ctf face from ut99 but face 3 is not bad at all

Dat space Egypt

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

Face is a bad map and so is 2fort, and if you disagree then your programming is inferior!

[–] Localhorst86@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Its cool that they didn't neglect the Linux versions, installed all three titles on my steam deck
