Their charge is espionage, which is apparently somewhat dubious.

I'm not sure why anyone (especially a western woman) would consider Iran as a tourism destination.

People travel there and enjoy it. Iranian people seem very hospitable

Oh I don't doubt the people are cool.

I just can't understand tourism to extreme authoritarian states. I can't personally justify the risk, which is entirely my thing and I shouldn't project.

These kinds of sham trials and convictions purely happen because the government of those people have arrested and convicted Iranian spies and/or assassins. They'll only ever be released in exchange for those. Like what Iran did for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asadollah_Asadi
