Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

Doing ok. Decided last night to cook more so I can lose weight. Been eating too much take out.

Did afew fixes on my server

Probably will buy a pair of shoes this weekend.

All pretty boring stuff really. Life is slower these days, I don't drink anymore but also don't have crippling lows like I used to. I have a family of my own now who I adore. Life is good

How are you guys?

I'm doing well! I've also been doing a few fixes on my server 😅. If we exclude Lemmy, I've also upgraded from Jellyseerr to Seerr, and added a Calibre Web service for syncing to Kobo, which I think is really cool. You can set you Kobo to point at your self-hosted server instead of the Kobo store, and your books show up on your Kobo wirelessly like purchases. And then it proxies anything else through to the actual store if you want, so don't lose anything.

Nice to hear life is good for you!

Kia ora Dave

Do we have you to thank for this Lemmy instance?

I have heard of seerr. I need to move over to it.

That sounds awesome. I looked at doing that. I also have a kobo and use calibre. Tbh I wasn't totally sure how to connect calibre web and didnt want to wreck anything so I left it alone but the idea of wireless syncing is really attractive.

I just run a wee truenas and I know enough to get by but that's about it haha

Do we have you to thank for this Lemmy instance?

I keep things running, yeah, but there are plenty of people to thank. Everyone helps where they can 🙂

I have heard of seerr. I need to move over to it.

There was this tool called Overseerr, made for Plex, that was for searching for and finding media to feed into the *arr stack, or just a user-friendly place people who used your Plex instance could request media.

From that came Jellyseerr, which was the same sort of thing but for Jellyfin.

Very recently the two teams have banded together to work on a single product, Seerr, which connects to Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby. So my upgrade was from Jellyseerr to Seerr, which was very straightforward. It doesn't replace any of the rest of the *arr stack, but it's a nice addition where people can search any media then send requests and they can be fed straight to Sonarr or Radarr.

I also have a kobo and use calibre. Tbh I wasn’t totally sure how to connect calibre web and didnt want to wreck anything so I left it alone but the idea of wireless syncing is really attractive.

I think this is the tutorial I followed: https://jccpalmer.com/posts/setting-up-kobo-sync-with-calibre-web/

It was pretty straightforward. If you already have Calibre Web set up, you basically just need to enable Kobo Sync in the settings and copy the URL it gives you into a config file that sits on your Kobo. Just make a copy of the file (which you can leave on the Kobo) before you change anything in case you screw it up. But it was honestly super easy, like Kobo wanted it to be easy.

Books on Calibre Web then show up like purchases on your Kobo, and you can download them from there.

I just run a wee truenas and I know enough to get by but that’s about it haha

We all started somewhere! It took me years to be confident enough to self host anything important.

In case you missed it, Lemmy.nz is going down tonight to move to a new VPS: https://lemmy.nz/post/34413158

It may not be straight away at 7:30, but once it goes down it will be fully down until everything is on the new VPS (or until I roll back if things don't go well).

For Lemmy.nz users, this means the lemmy.nz website won't work. You can lurk on a different server or just have a night off.

For people on other instances, this means any content posted to Lemmy.nz communities won't be federated until Lemmy.nz is back online. For example, if your account is on lemmy.world and you post to !newzealand@lemmy.nz, other users on Lemmy.world will see the post but users on other instances (say, sh.itjust.works) won't see it until Lemmy.nz is back up and federating.

As you might have noticed we were back up and running after a little over an hour last night.

I have noticed some slowdown this morning, and checking logs it seems 75% of traffic is coming from Asia and Africa. In a service like this, most traffic is federation, and we should see Lemmy.world at the top of that list. Unfortunately they are only about 7% of traffic, so it's likely most traffic is from AI scrapers.

I hope to look into getting Anubis set up this weekend, to see how much of a difference that can make.

Spent last night going through all the political parties and their policies. Damn do they suck! Labour was the only one who had concrete policy and even then only on doctors visits and loans for new doctor practices.

Every other party from the Greens to Act or all nothing burgers and hot air sentenses usually taking the form of "this is a problem, we will fix it" no "how" or "what with"

I know its early in the election cycle but its still very lax

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 week ago

There's that website, I think it's https://policy.nz/, that the parties all give their detailed policy stances to. That site is still on the 2025 local elections. The parties aren't going to provide the policies until they have publicly announced them, so I guess we will need to wait a few months before they get everything updated.

Sorry all, I've been playing with anubis tonight so you might have seen some weird things. I haven't got it working so will try again tomorrow.

If you're noticing slowdown, well yep, we're getting hammered, presumably by AI scrapers (7 day history): unique visitors graph showing seven days of graph, no scale but a total of 4.53 million unique visitors, with the last three days being a huge increase

Yeah so that peak of the graph is over 2 million unique requests that day, and the earlier part of the week has about 100k a day. So a 20x increase.
