Actually there is very much an overrepresentation of queer men in fraternities, and even more in fraternity leadership. During my undergrad I'd say about 20% of fraternity men were queer. From talking to other fraternity men across the country, that number seemed to be pretty universal. If you start looking at Executive board members that number starts to rise to probably 30-40%.
Don't get me wrong, lots of things about fraternities are disgusting, and I am not sure they deserve to exist TBH. But they are often a refuge for awkward closeted gays.
Oh, c'mon now. People are individuals. You're not really doing anyone any favors with these broad generalizations. Not all non-straight men are interesting, and not everyone who joined a fraternity is an NPC incapable of thinking for themselves. You can't just take a massive group of people like that and treat them as if they're all the same.
I know plenty of interesting straight men capable of thinking for themselves, and none of them ever joined a fraternity
I've got to imagine the societal pressure amongst kids now is far greater than it used to be, what with cameras and the internet everywhere.
Not to mention that most of them just aren't getting anywhere near the education they should be. They're dumb and scared, and they should be considering the state of the world they're going to live in.
A buddy of mine's grandad once got drunk with us when we were like 17ish, and told us that no matter we did, we should never join a fraternity in college.
Apparently, when he was in college, he got sucked into this cycle of hazing and sunk cost fallacy (not what he called it, but that's what I think it was). It started off pretty basic, and ended up with him and a couple other pledges being dressed as girls and servicing all of the brothers for a weekend. Including, and this is a quote, "taking it up the ass. The other two guys got some butter shoved up their first, but I didn't." Said he bled for days and couldn't tell anyone, because then they'd call him a f-slur and probably kick him out of school

How can the fraternity kick you out of school? Do they have that amount of authority or influence?
Probably due to it being within the times that being gay/ socialist/communist/anything non-conforming, could lead to social expulsion with no protections. Someone could probably complain to a dean and they would just rubber stamp a removal from the school. It hasn't been that long since that was the reality really.

Trauma bonding + a bit of Stockholm syndrome and you have made perfect little upper middle class secret keepers under authority that will be perfect for perpetuating systems of financial fraud, corruption, child trafficking, and apparently CSA rings.
This is genuinely so strange to me. I wouldn't generally mind that one has to somehow prove themselves to be able to join but just to humiliate other because it's something you had to endure few years earlier makes no sense to me and I don't want anything to do with a club that does that. I'm far more likely to find likeminded people within the group who chose not to join for the same reason.
Never understood this as well, the point is that recruits don't know exactly what is going to happen as it either secret or changed every year. What I have heard is that in some cases the hazing escalates every year.
I've always gone to these things as a guest, and honestly still an insane thing to witness. In my country they often punish with a "7 jump" or "zevensprong" where you have to drink 7 beers right after each other while they chant a song. Which with the right technique to not make them foam in your stomach while drinking, can be done without puking. But honestly like at least 7/10 people puke their brains out while doing it AND you have to finish all 7 even if you're immediately puking them out one by one.

I'll never understand hazing. I joined a fraternity because I liked the people in it and loved the organization's philosophies. One of which was a zero tolerance stance on hazing. Didn't matter if you were one of the oldest chapters or one in the process of chartering, National would pull your letters and shutter your chapter.

I had a cousin that joined a less popular one and he came out alright. It's still weird though.
Ugh glad they're not as popular in Canada since traveling for school isn't as common as in the states.
One of my college criteria was one with no fraternities, and I have no regrets.
