Maybe I've been mind controlled, but I'm used to the algorithmic feed of youtube and reddit. The default simple reverse chronological method of mastodon is hard to use for me.

I'm not interested in reading each and every post, but prefer the most sensational ones upfront..

I've tried googling but couldn't find much apart from a third party website I had to put my login creds into..

Do you guys have a better solution for this?

You are aware that the default Mastodon interface has a tab called "trending"?

(You might need to enable it first under "Preferences > Appearance > Discovery".)

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

is it global trending or personal feed? thanks

[–] vermaterc@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's global trending. Which I find unfortunate, because it basically defeats a purpose of thematic servers. For example I'm on Polish server, full of people taking in Polish, but I see only global trends which are not at all in Polish 🫤

There are local feeds as well.

[–] vermaterc@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

but these do not work like "trending", right? They are chronologic?

Follow more ppl and hastags

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

doesn't that make the situation worse with a busier feed??

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You'll find more of what you like too

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"more" is not the keyword here.. "condensed" is what I'm looking for. I dont think you understand my point

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I see, sorry i can't help you

It exists! https://github.com/michelcrypt4d4mus/fedialgo_demo_app_foryoufeed

Not sure if this is what you found already, you should be able to log in to your usual instance then use it in the same browser without sending anyone your credentials. Or self host if you prefer.

Different software can do this in a less privacy invasive way.

NodeBB has "popular" filters that show you what is generating discussion (per day, week, month, etc.)

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I searched for nodebb.. it is just forum hosting?

[–] julian@activitypub.space 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

@ntn888@lemmy.ml yep, it's a forum you can self host.

https://github.com/nodebb/nodebb

Or join activitypub.space (but that one is geared toward fediverse developers)

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it doesn't look like it's federated.. let alone linked to mastodon?

[–] julian@activitypub.space 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm talking to you from it right now 🤨

[–] ntn888@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Okay I'll give it a look thanks

There is a client called phanpy which (I believe) provides custom recommendation algorithms, but I never tried it myself. Those who use swear by it.

[–] halm@leminal.space 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A better solution would be to get used to an algorithm-free feed. Having "sensational" BS blasted at you at all times is addictive, shortens your attention span, and is the reason Mastodon didn't go for those algorithms.

hmm I see, I think I'll just try sticking. It must be working, the environment is much nicer than the other social media.. but the thought that I have to read all those posts..
