I remember a while ago I saw a TikTok but for fediverse and also an instagram. What other cool programs are there for the fediverse?

Funhole isn't exactly hidden but you might not see it if your instance isn't federated to it.

It's just always funny to see. Usually some topical and surrealist humor and the comment section is just all

THANK YOU FOR ENGAGING WITH THE CONTENT MMMM YES THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS CONTENT THIS IS VERY GOOD CONTENT THANK YOU FOR COMPLIMENTING MY CONTENT

no phones, just vibes and people being goobers in the moment

Not only have I not seen it, I can't even find it when I go looking for it.

Bookwyrm! It's for discussing, reviewing and tracking books. It's still beta but I've been enjoying it for years now.

Never heard of it, what's that?

Yep super promising and necessary for anyone rightly not wanting to use amazon current problem is duplicates and lack of content.

[–] tofu@lemmy.nocturnal.garden 1 points 1 hour ago

Lack of content is always relative of course, I'd say there's some genres that are well represented where you can find reviews for most books. My timeline is everything but empty as well.

Duplication is a thing. It isn't super annoying for most users though. Find any copy of your book and start reading.

I've been meaning to join bookwyrm, but can never decide what instance to join, so I keep putting it off.

You can move later and also export and import your reviews.

I run https://wyrms.de/, feel free to join.

I'm always searching to expand my feed, so it usually goes from "hidden gem" to completely normal!

That said, I find that the "scaled" search option is excellent upon making such discoveries...

For federated apps, I really like Lemmy itself for text discussions, and PeerTube for video. The cool thing about the fediverse is you actually own your content and can move instances without losing your audience. It’s like the opposite of the social media trap where you build an audience but don’t own any of it. I’m working on something similar called The Zeitgeist Experiment - mapping public opinion via email to cut through the algorithmic noise. Not federated, but same spirit of reclaiming thoughtful discourse from engagement-optimized platforms.

This isn’t what I asked. I don’t care for shitpost

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

oh, you mean what are some good federated apps? like peertube instead of youtube, etc.?

have you tried searching for your answer?

I found this post, for example: https://lemmyverse.link/feddit.uk/post/280651

Wow this is cool. Why is nextcloud there and where is masstadon. Do you recommend any?

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

For Mastodon: https://joinmastodon.org/

Nextcloud is included because it's part of the fediverse: https://nextcloud.com/blog/federation-a-foundational-concept-for-digital-sovereignty/

Mastodon is fairly popular and well supported if you like Twitter-like micro-blogging. Some Lemmy instances actually federate with Mastodon instances, so you can post to Lemmy communities from Mastodon, and vice versa.

I do have a peertube account I use to host videos sometimes, but otherwise I don't personally have any recommendations beyond thinking Mastodon is a relatively mature and popular platform.
