Mein gott, muss das sein? So ein bockmist aber auch.
(thats the full extent of my German language skills)
Better late then never my friend! I got rid of mine about 10 years ago. If a product only exists on Amazon, then I don't want it

Iโm afraid it peaked at Feliz Navidad
Good work! I cancelled my prime subscription and have not ordered anything from Amazon 2 months ago. When my current sub time ends in October I plan to also delete my account.
Alternatives please.
To a webshop or the media?
I've been making a more conscious effort to avoid buying American ever since Trump got re-elected (both for reducing dependency or American tech firms, as well as not finanicially supporting a country with a fascist government) and Amazon was one of the easiest companies to cut out of my life.
There's still plenty of alternative webstores in the Netherlands at least.
Would you happen to have links to some of your favorites? I'd love to start cutting off Amazon, but that's going to be a journey.... I know it'll be worth it in the end though!
Last year I made a list for a comment on another post
Amazon alternatives for the NL:
General:
Computers:
Electronics:
- Mediamarkt
- AlleKabels - They sell all kinds of cables
Clothes:
Groceries:
Drugs and cosmetics:
Bikes:
Do It Yourself:
Office:
Furniture:
Second hand marketplace:
This isn't an exhaustive list. There is probably many I have not mentioned.
Thank you! I appreciate the links!
for groceries there's probably many alternatives in many other nations.
I haven't subscribed to Audible for a few years now, but a few days ago I finally managed to find time and energy to pull the files and convert them to mp3. Took a day, had to fight with the Libation app to get it running properly (if you are on Linux using it, change the temp file directory to something other than what it stupidly uses as default). But I'm so glad I finally did it, I felt joy deleting my account. I know it probably doesn't affect anything but it made me feel warm and fuzzy.
That's what I did 8 month back. I still have an account but collect a cart then order once every other month or so.
The level of pathetic spam to offer me to use prime again is desperate and borderline pitiful.
This reminds me. Where do you guys buy stuff like accessories for less known devices, e.g., retro handhelds? I buy everything on my local marketplaces, but these I can only find on Amazon or Temu/AliExpress. Any recommendations?
I buy from refurbishers and modders. It's more expensive, but got some fully refurbished and tested PS2 controllers this way.
AliExpress is the only option for some stuff like this and SBC gaming.
I don't buy that stuff, and I got rid of my Amazon account a couple years ago, but I still buy stuff there occasionally. sometimes it's just the only place I can find something, and I'm okay with that. as long as I'm minimizing using it.
Same. All expensive purchases are made using European online shops. The only time I use Amazon is for cheap fringe stuff that I can't find anywhere else and where quality doesn't matter.
Dont let perfect be the enemy of good.
ebay existed when amazon was a bookstore, i still use it..
Well done! We haven't looked back
Hell yeah, brother
And replaced it with what?
Nothing. If I need something, I get off my couch and go in a store, even better if family owned. This way, I purchase something only if I really need it. I'm saving a lot of money by avoiding compulsive shopping, I help my community, and Bezos can go fuck himself.
local shops, direct sales from the manufacturer, simply other companies that aren't quite as shitty, and then when I absolutely cannot find something elsewhere and absolutely need the item, I go back to amazon.
A shop 1,6km away from my house
Thatโs a big-ass shop.
When I lived in Japan it was easy to kill my Amazon account because of a little site called Rakuten. Basically, Japanese Amazon.
Now I live in the EU, and Rakuten sellers do not ship outside of Japan. Thereโs suppose to be a global shipment service, but itโs limited, shipping costs are high, and I cannot get them to confirm my address either way. So Iโm having to rely on Amazon again until I can find a like marketplace website that is based in Europe.
until I can find a like marketplace website that is based in Europe.
Have you tried Galaxus yet? It's been my go-to since culling my Amazon account in early 2025.
Thatโs a big-ass shop.
Well, it doesn't have to be huge, since I don't need the whole of amazons inventory on a weekly basis.
Europe does have alternative webshops, but they are generally not Europe-wide. So I can't tell you what webshops to use without knowing where in Europe you live.
The Netherlands has Bol.com, for instance, and Germany has Otto from what I understand.
Glad to inform you that these days many Rakuten Sellers just use it as a second front-end. Logistics are handled by Amazon, often the package is Amazon wrapped. Not all, but based on my sample around 2/3.
In the last couple of years I started getting those. But not that frequently.
You canโt know for sure until you buy something. Some sellers say your order โmayโ be fulfilled by Amazon.
Nice, maybe I'm just buying the wrong things. I also saw this notice sometimes and then just picked a different seller, but some don't write it there
There are a lot of other shops online and regional and from europe. Depends on what articles you want to buy.
I've stopped buying at Amazon a good while ago, I find most of what I need in smaller European web stores, I'll buy computer, household, garden and farm stuff mostly. Also, small local shops around here will order stuff they don't have in stock.
I used to collect Amazon gift cards from walking apps so I could get books and other things from them. After buying a small Jackery unit and solar panel last week, I've switched my gift cards to other, non-US options. I refuse to even give them pitiful ad revenue.
