We are in the planning stages of setting up an aquarium. I last had fish about 25 years ago in another country, so I’m having to catch up on what’s happened in that time along with figuring out what brands/suppliers are available.

Planning to start with about a 60L tank, tropical aquascape-ish with tetras or rasboras and some shrimp/corys/a pleco/whatever. Eventually we’d like to branch out into saltwater/reef, but that’s well into the future when we’re firmly committed to making that leap.

We’ve visited Aquarama in Stafford and liked the shop. Do you have any preferred or recommended shops that might be better?

I quite like Annerley Aquarium in Greenslopes, and Smiths Aquarium in Boondall.

There's also Atlas Aquarium, and Pauls Aquarium at Oxley who are more fresh focused than salt.

Gallery Aquatica used to be at Salisbury but I think they shut that one and now just have Tingalpa. They're more salt focused than fresh though. I don't like salt. Gets all crusty.

MAD at Underwood is a pretty good store to go look around, but I found them really expensive. The store is also super busy on a weekend so I tend to avoid it.

There was a kind of dodgy looking fish shop nearby too called Exotic Fish Connections that is like... basically unadvertised? There was a single flat sign out the front and the place always looked completely deserted. Every other shop around it was closed so the carparks are all empty. And the sliding door didnt work properly so it felt like it was locked when you first tried it. We only stopped because I saw some people walk out with fishies one day so we pulled in. It had a surprisingly large amount of stuff inside and was cheap from what I remember. I think it's gone now though the website hasn't been updated to say they're gone. Possibly they were renovating? The place looked completely gutted when I last drove past. Never got fish from there, but bought some sweet looking driftwood I used in a tank recently:

Cheers mate! That’s amazingly comprehensive! Many thanks indeed 🙏

I like your setup there. I had forgotten that Rainbows are native to Oz. Well done!

I think in the photo of that tank there's Praecox rainbows and a Bolivian Ram which are not Australian native, though I did have an assortment of in my 6 foot tank. That 4 foot is currently a temporary home for the 6ft inhabitants as its meant to be getting replaced. Damn rain keeps ruining that plan!

There's definitely Crimson Spotted and Goyder River rainbows in there. I really like rainbows. When the 6ft is replaced I'm going to stock it with a massive group of just one type of rainbow. Thinking of doing a reverse under gravel filter with a sump. Bit of fun engineering to make it work without risking overflowing isssues, and should result in a spectacular amount of biological filtration. And hopefully bugger all maintenance, cause cleaning is boring.

That looks amazing and your plans sound pretty rad!
