Those fucking scooters are the definition of e-waste I stg. Nobody has any respect for them, and why should they? They get thrown around and beat up by everyone because the companies just go and dump them somewhere on the street without any regard to what might happen.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're actually a great way to get around in cities. And people always get extremely upset when some stupid scooter is in the way. But somehow the millions of parked cars that clog up every last tiny bit of available space get a pass.

Yeah I hate people that hate e scooters and totally fine with buying a car

I always thought they were a hazard to begin with because who’s going to bring a helmet to town just to ride one? Now you’ve got a bunch of people riding a powered unfamiliar vehicle without safety gear in a public place. And a lot of people ride them in bike lanes. Just no thought at all put into the program.

Better in the bike lanes than the side walk

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

As opposed to riding them where? In my city it’s illegal to ride them on the sidewalk.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

It’s more the point of riding them in traffic without a helmet. With a helmet, I agree they should be in the bike lane.

Yeah, effective transportation solutions require a lot of forethought and built out infrastructure, these just get thrown out into a city with a lot of pedestrian traffic and "good luck." Anybody who thinks these are a solution to a problem obviously never met a bike (which usually get taken better care of since they're personal property.)

e-bikes and scooters have enable minorities in my community to navigate the very same infrastructure that's meant to opress them.

The ones who abuse the equipment do so out of privilege.

I find them very useful to commute to work. It's just a matter or parking properly. The ones that I use require you to take a picture of them parked after you're done.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

If you're using them to commute (presumably very regularly), you should probably buy your own.

[–] liuther9@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

It is easier to just get out, ride one, park and forget about it rather than being paranoid that it might get stolen

The scooters you buy instead of rent have folding handlebars. You can just carry the thing in to work (or wherever else, for other errands) with you.

(A folding bike, especially one with a Brompton-style fold, is also good for that sort of thing. I'd prefer it over an e-scooter, TBH.)

Yall really are ready to sell yourselves to technofeudalism for a little convenience. Its very American.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 3 points 4 weeks ago

Or just get a bike.

if you live in an urban center you can own your own, and xiaomi makes some with great suspension that slightly lessen the badness of potholes and other issues

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I was going to say, this one has so many but's its easy. Multiple people on one scooter, reckless driving, driving at locations where they shouldn't etc etc.

Of course it's always a few people messing it up for everone. Still, after the whole rent cycle catastrophe (and yes it is, there are Chinese landfills full of them) now this is version 2.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

there are Chinese landfills full of them

I think the surviving companies just bought up the failed ones and stripped them for parts. Chinese towns and cities are still full of rental scooters, but they're down from like 12 companies with equal distribution to like 60% Meituan, 20% Hello Bike, 10% that turcoise one, and then a few small ones that are only in a few cities.

On any case, they're hugely sucessful, with cities building dedicated, seperated lanes, sometimes 2 carlanes wide, that get packed with hundreds of riders per minute during rush hour, and dedicated parking on nearly every sidewalk. I cannot imagine the amount of gridlock and parking lots if those people used cars instead.

Multiple people on one scooter

I saw this hundreds to thousands of times a day and have done it myself. There's nothing dangerous about putting 2+ people on a scooter.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

First, the latter. We could discuss about this but here's it's even against the law.

Regarding the former: the city of Munich was literally full of them. Now they're down to some but like a few percent of the original amount. Seriously they were clogging up everything.

I can not imagine them all suddenly being reused in China. But it's a nice thought.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oh, when you said landfill in China, I assumed you were talking about rental scooters in China lol. I know nothing about the rental scooter situation in Germany.

Regarding the law: If its a bad law, enforcement is also bad, and it should go unenforced until the law is updated.

Huh. I wonder how we got from "destroy all the bikes" to "there's bikes most everywhere, and kei-trucks going around making sure they're where they're needed."

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

Welcome to the Midwest. I had a scooter that went about 50mph, but it was worthless because the roads are so fucked if you hit a pot hole at40-50 you're screwed.

There's not enough road in my potholes
