I bought a pack of Hanes socks. Not a single pair lasted more than 8 days.

I've made socks. Big ones. Kilt worthy ones. Weeks of work. But what if I made ankle socks. Ones where you get two socks from a skein instead of three or for skeins per pair?

I have a stash of sock yarn. Some of it is this brown and blue that was popular in 2008 and is, in my opinion, one of the worst color combinations that has ever existed in human history. But it's free.

I have my swatch done. Now to figure out a pattern. Eventually I'll need a darning egg.

I gotta learn darning at some point …

As soon as my current wood glue up is done I will be in the wood shop making a darning egg.

Excuse my uninformed question, but why would you need a darning egg if you are knitting socks from scratch?

Because when they eventually wear thin I will be able to repair them

Did you find a pattern? I used KnitFreedom’s toe-up pattern for my first pair. You could start the cuff as soon as you finish the heel to make them ankle socks.

There’s also this pattern by Purl Soho that I have saved but haven’t used yet.

Can’t wait to see your sock progress!

I always wing it.

But that failed here. I had made good progress but ending up frogging because it was 12 stitches too wide. I started over last night.
