In my textbook I was assigned in sinology for my first class on an intro to Chinese cultural history this was discussed pretty openly. I feel like the depiction of the Tiananmen protests of being purely about people wanting a liberal democracy exist mainly in the media.

The media is mostly what matters, because it mostly shapes public opinion, which is the goal of propaganda. Scholarly works and classes at elite universities have a lot more freedom than corporate media, including bookstore chains.
I don't go to an elite university literally any one can get in as long as they passed highschool and it's free if you finish within a certain time frame.
