Environmentally speaking Dams kind of suck and with climate change full in swing idk how much of a safe investment they will be for the future.

I find it kind of funny how people just assume that state planners in China wouldn't have considered obvious things before committing to a huge project like this.
Well let's see. Economic development has trumped environmental concerns many times. There is a capitalist class in China that puts wealth accumulation above environmental well-being regardless of whether there is a Communist party there to discipline them. China does some interesting environmental work, but currently no country has a sustainable economy.
It's very clear to anybody who's spent any time learning about China that the capitalist class does not make these kinds of decisions there. China has been at the forefront of clean energy development by a huge margin, and whatever environmental impact hydro power might have, it's unarguably better than continued usage of fossil fuels.
