*Meta CLAIMS TO HAVE stripped facial recognition code...

[–] ironycanal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

No they said they fixed the thing they wanted to do. Everything's okay now.

[–] meowcar42O@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

thats why i only buy devices with an unlocked bootloader

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Oh yeah, but how long until it "accidentally" gets "re-added" with a "software update"?

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 12 points 3 days ago

Or even if they just obfuscated the code?

[–] ironycanal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's really mean. How many times do you have to stop this man doing his favorite 90s SciFi novel before you accept you've done it?

I wouldn't mind it, but he seems to be obsessed with being the bad guy, being the evil villain that our as yet to be named hero shows up to stop with the power of friendship and incredible violence.

No, he said he would stop, why you internet commies always gotta assume bad faith when you discover the evil lizard man oligarch secretly trying to do 'snow crash' again?

Remember, folks... buy your sunglasses from safety stores - not tech bros.

I don't know that we can call this a victory. It's just a delay. The program wasn't even active yet. They're just pulling it the code and will just as it back in when it's "ready".

A victory would be Meta stating definitively that they'll never implement any sort of centralized facial recognition technology. And even that probably barely qualifies coming from a company that has repeatedly engaged in downright malicious surveillance.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 3 points 3 days ago

A victory would be putting Fuckerberg and the rest of the leadership in prison and then breaking meta up into hundreds of useless companies that eventually go out of business. They deserve no less for what they've done to the world.

Why are we OK with smart glasses in the first place???

[–] modus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Because they agreed to ~~hide~~ remove one feature. Now we're cool with it. Jeez... If you would come to the meetings you would know this.

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

For now. Eventually it's going to be repackaged and reimplemented.

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 6 points 3 days ago

"In fascist America, glasses watch you!"

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If I see anyone wearing these in public I'm still going to "accidentally" knock them onto the ground and break them.

[–] skarn@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 days ago

You mean the glasses, right?

...

Right?
