Canada needs to double electricity generation by 2050. Could balcony solar help get us there?

In this interview, Calgary Climate Hub chair Joe Vipond explains how plug-in solar systems are giving renters, condo owners, and apartment dwellers access to the energy transition. Already popular in Germany and gaining traction in parts of the United States, balcony solar allows consumers to install a few solar panels and offset a portion of their household electricity use.

We discuss the economics, safety concerns, regulatory barriers, battery storage, and why Canada has been slow to adopt a technology that could lower electricity bills and reduce pressure on the grid.

why do they need to double? just don't build so many datacenters

It's mostly the transition to Plug-in hybrids, EVs and heat pumps as a lot of Canada is electrifying. Most homes in Canada are currently heated with natural gas furnaces which aren't going to be sensible much longer.

The official statement by Carney is "As our industries expand, our economy grows, and AI accelerates, electricity demand in Canada is expected to double by 2050." So how much of that is them actually caring about getting homes off natural gas/home heating oil and how much is an excuse to make more data centers is yet to be determined. I suspect they'll pretend they're helping everyone with a lot of talk and then just help 1 or 2 key industries as usual.
