More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Government: We must age-gate food!

[–] tankplanker@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Its already here, I had an ID check when I purchased some red bull yesterday, well I would have done if I looked forty years younger.

Just wait until you have to show your ID for a big mac. (although, realistically, McFat will lobby hard enough to get the government to recognise big macs as "healthy" food)

Copying the Americans with their pizza is a fruit classification?

Well pizza can be moderately healthy. It's just the sort of pizza most people eat isn't.

Thin base of sourdough bread with tomato, onions and peppers and a light sprinkling of cheese.

Yup, far too much added processed sugar and fats, but thats the vast majority of problem foods problem.

A whole wheat or cauliflower base would be all I changed if I was aiming for a healthy pizza

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 hours ago

Oh yeah been meaning to try cauliflower for a base sometime.

Lobbying can bend the laws of nature 💪

Sadly the government doesn't want to address its successive failings.

Organic food should be cheaper than processed food, given the long term costs on the health system of the cheap processed foods.

All restaurants and takeaways should be required to publish nutritional information. I acknowledge that it may lack accuracy for independent places given how often they're able to do so and the variables, but a guideline doesn't hurt anyone, just the opposite in fact.

Subsidise getting people to see nutritionists to teach them about food and nutrition.

Subsidise them getting calorie trackers. Everyone should have one and be able to upgrade to meet their needs.

Subsidise fitness access nationally. Let's be honest, gyms are way overpriced in most cases.

There's a common misconception that people need to be more active but the reality is that they simply need a calorie deficit and providing all the tools for that, from start to finish is the key to health and longevity.

Fresh vegetables are already cheaper than processed food. Though plain white flour is cheaper than any wholemeal options.

Not sure what the costs are like if you buy the raw grains, but usually that requires ordering it to be delivered to you and that inherently pushes the costs way higher.

Cracked rye - £2.20 per kg plus delivery ordered online. Plain white flour for under £1/kg at Aldi. Part of the problem there is people don't buy wholegrain products much so they don't get stocked.

Edit - maybe you could make traditional Scottish bannocks? Rolled oats are one of the cheapest foods per kg you can buy and still have a decent amount of nutrients in them unlike processed flours. Can't find a recipe that isn't obviously modern and the AI generated one while it sounds reasonable, I can't find sources for. Oatmeal and enough water to form a dough, maybe some added fat or salt. I suppose I could experiment and see how it turns out with none, a bit and a lot of fat to compare. Oatmeal is just a case of grinding up the rolled oats.
