A newly elected council leadership has rescinded the authority's climate emergency declaration with the councillor who put forward the motion to repeal saying the "polar bears are not extinct" and Sir David Attenborough's shows always contain "a global warming narrative".

Sunderland City Council, which was taken over by Reform UK in May, repealed the 2019 declaration on Wednesday at the new council's first full meeting.

Councillor Bill Blackett said previous position distorted spending priorities.

They just claim it's normal, it's summer of-course it's hot, The government is pushing their agenda by putting out warnings. That kind of nonsense.

There's no talking to these kinds of people because they've decided that they're correct and will do everything in their power to maintain the narrative. You can't argue with them because they have no capability to learn from information presented and change their minds.

They're correct and everyone else is wrong because their politics are "correct".

Also it bears repeating: Reform are funded by fossil fuel lobby groups. It is in their financial interest to claim there's no climate emergency.
