Tempus is an open-source and lightweight music client for Subsonic, designed and built natively for Android.

This app works with any service that implements the Subsonic API, including:

https://github.com/eddyizm/tempus/releases/tag/v4.20.0

My last release post was for v4.12.0 so I've included whats changed since that post.

What's Changed

Highlighting these 5 features that people have wanted for some time and were well received.

And a ton of bug fixes, performance improvements and other features -> Full Changelog: https://github.com/eddyizm/tempus/compare/v4.12.0...v4.20.0

note app-tempo* <- The github release with all the android auto/chromecast features

app-degoogled* <- The izzyOnDroid release that goes without any of the google stuff.

As usual, any dev contributions appreciated as I am not actually a java/mobile dev, so my progress is significantly slower than those who do this on the daily.

Big thanks to all the folks who have been contributing.

You patched the annoying "crash-on-start" bug! ๐Ÿ˜ I was collecting diagnostics to help nail it down, but you guys were faster. Keep up the great work! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I've been getting a lot of help lately so the community support is what is making it better.

Love tempus, it's my main navidrome client on mobile. Thanks for all the great work!

Yeah, Tempo hasn't had any updates in a while. I used it originally, but moved to this fork.

thank you for this project

i use it since 3 weeks and i love it.

after i setup my music server i was a bit lost... but this musicplayer with android auto is so good

[โ€“] eddyizm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Hopefully google doesn't block android auto access in the near future.

Looking forward to trying this out. Been using Symfonium for its android auto support. Glad to see another Navidrome supporting client with android auto capabilities.

I love Symfonium

My friend, I am a daily user of tempus and it is amazing.

Still, my biggest problem in this app is UI. I really hope some nice UX changes come around soon seeing as functionality side is so advanced in comparison. Still I thank thr devs for all the love and work they put in it!

[โ€“] eddyizm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What ux changes are you looking for?

[โ€“] aqua_cat@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)
  • you cant pull down the player on cover image
  • you need to scroll all the way to the top of the song queue to swipe down, and back button closes the queue AND player. I found out you can pull fown if you pull over the drop shaped "+" button which is not obvious at all, and it still sometimes closes the player too.
  • in Home in the corner there is a three button overflow menu icon, but when pressed only option is settings. Why not just make it a gear icon to begin with?
  • same thing with build-in equalizer when in player
  • why does sleep timer has to have 7 presets + end of song + custom? I belive 3 presets + end of song + custom is more than enough. I mean how much time are we saving here?
  • in downloads option for changing view type from artist/album/track.. uses a filter icon even though it is not doing any filtering. Sort would also be nice for most recent, but that is more of a feature request
  • When downloading a song the download icon next to it doesnt apear untill you refresh it (sometimes?)

This is more personilized now but UI looks dated. Before switching to Subsonic I used a client called InnerTune and may be controversial but in terms of looks Tempus for me is clearly a downgrade, and so do say my friends I showed it to.

Now I listed just the UI stuff I dislike, excluding what I like. Hope this clears it out. :3

Hi aguacat! Thanks for going in to detail. It seems like most of those things are legacy items, (except for the sleep timer) that came from before the fork. In particular, the settings I have found as a really odd design decision. The app needed a lot of work and most of these things are have been much lower priority to stabilize, it is coming up on a year that I forked it. There may be some tickets for osme of these and if you would be so inclined, I'd be happy to have some of these open on a github issue.

[โ€“] aqua_cat@pawb.social 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks for taking your time reding trough it. I didn't know Tempus was a fork, but that makes much more sense. Regarding opeing a github issue I prefer to not interact with GitHub out of personal beliefs, but if you have a mirror on Codeberg or GitLab I would love to contribute!

[โ€“] eddyizm@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Sounds good. I'm looking at getting my stuff over to codeberg so that will likely be in the near future.

Navic has the best UI/UX in my experience. Too bad it is unstable AF when it comes to large libraries.

[โ€“] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Nice!

Does playback still randomly stop or jump baic to the beginning of the song?

[โ€“] nemothemoho@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have this same issue. I want to love this player. I like a lot about it. But I constantly have to restart playback in it.

[โ€“] eddyizm@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

We have fixed several of those bugs with the latest release as I know this has been a long standing issue. We've found the root cause for several of these and applied patches. Depending on what version you used last, you might be pleasantly surprised.

[โ€“] eddyizm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We have patched a lot of those bugs so not sure if we found all the edge cases.

[โ€“] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Just tried, still the same issue. After closing my phone and letting it be for 5-10 minutes, playback suddenly starts from the beginning. That is the beginning of the currently playing song I believe.

Then it's back to Navic for me. It does a similar thing, but instead of jumping back, it just pauses.
