!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.
The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.
If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.
If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.
Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.
Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.
Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.
Let everyone have their own content.
Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I think it mostly depends on the community. There are people from all over the world on here, and different groups have different demographics.
Unless you're using a server that's super-picky in its federation, I can't see that the server makes much of a difference.
I personally sort by "new comments" which isn't a thing on reddit. So I am more likely to see, and comment on, things if plenty of other people have also done so.
But I don't know how many other people do that.
I'll have to play around with New Comments.
What motivates you to do that?
I imagine it largely tracks with hot, with additional necrocommenting.
Mainly the fact that it makes sure that if I refresh after a few minutes, I will probably get different posts. That's not the case for most other sorting methods.
i know that many users float on the 'new' queues of their home instances for content... if it isnt in the first dozen pages it might get missed
and a prolly irrelevant comment; the fediverse is more than just lemmy. its not just that product youre interacting with, which could add a wrinkle in timing
Ah, it's interesting. I notice I do this myself.
So there's probably an initial rush on "New" that lasts a few hours, and then you move into the slow and steady trickle of the less frequent posters who scroll a curated feed.
