The original skit is even better. He asks what color a fire hydrant is and the AI dumps out 3 bottles of water and says, "blue."

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/google-searchs-udm14-trick-lets-you-kill-ai-search-for-good/

You can use something like udm14.org or a browser plugin to force web searches only

A bit besides the point, but I have been thinking about this.

I currently use duckduckgo. However I have two problems:

  • Most of the results are usually SEO spam
  • The page takes a ton of time to load

Google also has the first issue (though not nearly as much), and so do all its wrappers.

The only search engine that made me feel more or less like I was getting decent results was kagi (especially with the fact that I could block and report AI slop and block sites that I don't like), but that's just too expensive for me normally.

What do ya'll do for search?

I use searXNG

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Duck uses Bing backend, which is shit at the best of times.
Everyone who actually uses Kagi swears by it, and I am on the brink of actually trying it.

One of the key selling points of the AI search results is that they bypass the problem of wading through SEO slop. Though I’m sure that is just a matter of time.

The page takes a ton of time to load

Does using uBlock Origin help?

Or maybe https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite/?q=%25s ?
Or https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/?q=%25s

I’ve just started blocking SEO slop while using ddg on my main computer. Makes my life easier if it’s just DigitalOcean blogs rather than geeksforgeeks or linuxvox. The latter being full-on ai slop. At least DO/Vultr/whatever actually bothers with content quality because it’s their PaaS.

Damn, this comment made me discover ublacklist. I am definitely going to start using it!

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Yea, I tried duck duck. I always have to grab Google to get the results i need. I suppose if I was not a power user and in IT that I could take more time to look for results it would work. But for now Google is still king.

I run an uncensored gemm4 or qwen3. 6, funny thing you can tell them to giva ya result like google search but their is no publicity. Even google gemma4 is relatively helpful to do srarch. And since search are mostly llm now, no change.

I've honestly been using Claude or chatgpt for it and specifically asking for sources. But as they get more desperate for money they're going to start to have paid sponsorships...

Someday soon:

Search: "How to boil eggs"

  1. How to Boil Eggs Perfectly Boil water, gently lower eggs in, cook for 6–12 minutes depending on desired firmness, then cool in ice water.

(Here for suggestions. I've been feeling the same about DDG and Kagi)

DuckDuckGo is just a frontend to various Microsoft products.

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The easiest way to search without generating AI overviews is https://noai.duckduckgo.com/

I wish more search engines would implement something like this.

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you want to use Google instead of Bing, but don't want AI slop, set your default search engine to this.

https://google.com/search?udm=14&q=%25s

Along with ublock and Firefox, it gives me ad free, ai free, Google search.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago

doesn’t ecosia use google these days? may be better

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 2 points 1 day ago

Quant, startpage, kagi, btdig, shodan... Lots of good search engines out there still

[–] cogitase@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

Google uses semantic caching, so if you submit a query that is the same as another query in terms of the AI response, it won’t be generating a new reply each time.

Yah, why make Google work to de-anonymize my searches when I can just give someone my credit card so they know.

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago

You can pay with Bitcoin if you want, and there’s privacy pass. But I thought we were talking about forced AI overviews in search?
