A comedian once joked about how you're allowed to commit a vast array of atrocities within your own borders before anybody outside cares.

It's a sad fact that most people won't do anything about Billy down the street beating his wife until it starts happening out in the street or Billy starts beating other people's wives.

America is Billy doing both of those right now.

China didn’t threaten to annex my country again yesterday.

So you’re saying you don’t live in Taiwan.

Not just Taiwan; PRC is trying to claim the entire South China Sea. An entire body of international water.

"Do you prefer the criminal who is causing a major problem for you right now, or the criminal who is far away, causing smaller problems?"

The thing about China's CCP is that, while they have no regard for human rights, their actions are still rooted in reality. So, yes, they will storm your protest with armed agents; they will also build efficient public transport and invest in healthcare for their citizens.

The USA federal government long held the motto of indifference. They enforced little, and imposed little. Atrocities still occurred, of course (Slavery, Native genocide, anti-immigrant sentiment); but many of those atrocities were at the state level, and all were supported by the (recognized white male) people.

The War on Crime and its War on Drugs was where the USA went completely off the rails into "smash and crash" territory; wielding the power of the state with no consideration of the impact. Now you have federal agents breaking into peoples homes; while still glorifying the idea of "small government" and being a "self-starter".

The people of USAmerica know their government only as something to fear, and not as a bedrock to rely on; and this mentality of violence and conflict extends to all aspects of life. This is the sentiment that empowers Reaganomics, fear of single-payer healthcare, the anti-vaxx and MAHA movements, etc. This is also why so many folks are "opting out"; contributing to declining birth rates, antisocial radicals, etc.

There is no trust, nor should there be. Living in the USA means trying to survive in spite of the systems around you; and not within them; regardless of who you are. There is no "staying in line". Even outspoken MAGA cheerleaders are getting fucked. There is only the targeted, and yet-to-be targeted. This is America.

Yeah! The Third Reich might have done a little genocide and created a terror state that locks people away for protesting and not joining the ruling party, but at least they invested in the Autobahn for the citizens they didn't genocide!!!!

I agree with your sentiment. None of these governments are pleasant to live in; nor made up of good people. I would prefer not to live under the USA, China, or Nazi Germany.

Trump has made doing business with the US incredibly uncertain. You have a deal, then have it unilaterally changed during a midnight rant.

It's always preferable to have a sane villain instead of an insane one. You can at least try to predict the actions of the former.

I’m an American and I view China more positively than the US right now. I don’t trust a single thing Trump says or does.
